First- generation MD/Ph.D. students Danielle Sawyer and Brittany Gratreak at the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Tucson advocate for admissions equity through their recent publication in the BMJ, 'Medical schools must do more to open the door to first-generation and low-income students.'

In the article, they discuss barriers such as limited MCAT resources and bias against community colleges, and advocate for greater acknowledgement of the incredible distance that students must travel to apply to medical school.

OPPORTUNITY

The AMWA National Medical Student Division is excited to announce that we will be awarding two $2,000 scholarships to underrepresented students in medicine.

AMWA is dedicated to increasing the participation and fostering the leadership of women and minorities within the organization and in the broader medical community. Consistent with our founding principles, we recognize that our newly trained physicians and patients that we serve are from increasingly diverse ethnic backgrounds and communities. We actively promote a diverse culture through chapters and programs to a diverse group of pre-medical, allied health, and STE(A)MM students, medical students, and residents and are committed to mentoring, training, professional development, community, and public service programs. We want to be a part of minimizing health disparities and increasing diversity in medicine by supporting your medical education.

Awardees will be chosen based on the embodiment of the goals of AMWA. Financial need, though not a requirement, is also considered. Please apply by August 31st. More information at

JOIN THE AMWA OPIOID ADDICTION IN WOMEN TASK FORCE!

We are a subdivision of AMWA that focuses on education, research, and policy as it relates to sex and gender differences in opioid prescription, use, and outcomes. We are currently looking for enthusiastic individuals to join our 3 subcommittees.

Ongoing and future subcommittee projects are included below:

1) Opioids in pregnancy and new mothers - Create patient-facing pamphlets in English and Spanish to educate pregnant women and moms about Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, resources, and ways to prevent it. Seek out distribution methods with various physician organizations (ACOG, AAFP, etc.), national organizations, and other social media outlets to increase patient awareness

2) Naloxone Use and Education - Develop training videos, infographics, and other educational materials for lay people to use Naloxone. Future projects include adaptations for adolescents and Spanish-speaking patients

3) Intersection of Opioid Use and Race - Perform literature review and analysis in order to develop content for presentation and educational materials to post on AMWA social media. Interested in joining? Fill out: https://forms.gle/cfYexeo1FmyvWsWXA

Subcommittee members would be expected to attend monthly task force meetings and contribute to ongoing and future projects.
