Phase 2 of renovations has been officially approved!

One of the main values that has been expressed by our congregation over the last several years is the desire to be a fully inclusive church, including truly being a welcoming space to our members, friends and neighbors with wheelchairs and walkers.

We're pleased to report that our board and congregation voted to enter Phase 2 of our renovation efforts. Phase 2 will include:
  • Remodeling our main restrooms to be fully ADA accessible and completely gender neutral. Instead of having two restrooms, we will create six or seven individually contained "Family" style restrooms
  • Fully accessible ADA entrance with automatic door opener
  • Landscaping
  • Versatile seating for all people including new furniture and updated decor in coffee/fellowship area near the sanctuary

New Sunday School for 3rd thru 5th Grades begins June 12

Beginning Sunday, June 12, Pastor Sarah will be leading a Summer class for 3rd-5th grades from 9-9:45am. We will begin by focusing on Bible basics such as how the Bible came to be, learning the books in the Bible, authorship, facts and myth, etc. It will be up to parents to decide if they want their children who are entering these grades (22/23 school year) to attend or whether they want their kids who are leaving these grades to attend.

Sunday School series for adults resumes June 12 -- "Uppity Women of the Bible"

This series is from Living the Questions, which provides resources for progressive Christians.

It will meet in Room 10 each Sunday at 9am.

Uppity Women of the Bible is a DVD-based series featuring Hebrew Bible professor Dr. Lisa Wolfe. Combining careful scholarship with humor and fresh insights, Dr. Wolfe presents just what your group needs for lively, thoughtful discussion of Ruth, The Song of Songs, Esther and Judith.
Please be careful! Water only in the sanctuary.

Did You Know?

On January 6, 1980 ground was broken for a new sanctuary, fellowship hall, offices, and additional classrooms.  As the church began this new endeavor in 1980, membership totaled 231.  Dave McKay summed up the outlook of the congregation:

"We are still striving for that greater simplicity, for better understanding one with another, for a faith which is expressed not just in worship, but in the everyday walks of life!  This is our goal!  To be able to bring into all lives which are touched, the richness of fellowship and the warmth of the love of God, to be led by the Spirit into the challenges of the future.  This is Brentwood's calling."

The new building was dedicated on Sunday, February 1, 1981.  Nearly 600 people shared in two worship services.  The Woodhaven Bell Choir performed.  After Dave McKay resigned Frank Mace accepted the call to be Brentwood's third minister.  He served for three years, and then in August 1997, Russell Willougby became Brentwood's fourth minister.  In the years following 1997,  Brentwood continued its tradition of growth and adventure.  An impressive sign was constructed, along with brick entrance and exit signs.  A new parking lot was added to the front of the property.  The chancel was expanded and a choir area was added to the sanctuary.  In May, 2000, Brentwood made the last building payment and was debt-free for the first time since 1979.  On June 11, a dual celebration was held commemorating the 40th anniversary and the debt-retirement of the church.  With this milestone reached, Brentwood was excited to see what new and exciting things would happen next.

Garden Request

We could use old panty hose, knee highs etc for the garden.

Mark your calendars for summer VBS!

Our Trinity friends have invited us to their joint VBS with Westminster Presbyterian. Pastor Sarah will be helping during this week and she would love to see as many of our kids and family and friends as possible. The event is free.

Brentwood participants can reserve a spot by contacting Pastor Sarah.

Gardenpalooza!

Our garden at Brentwood Christian Church is part of the Springfield Community Gardens, which is holding Gardenpalooza at Mother's Brewing Co on June 4 from 3-8 p.m.
