You will also learn four techniques of the Japanese resist technique called shibori, which was traditionally used with indigo to create patterns on white cloth over 1000 years ago. You will learn four methods for creating patterns: itajime, ne-maki, karamatsu and crackle.
In the morning we will set up the indigo vat and prepare 2 of our samples for dyeing. After lunch we will dye our first 2 samples and prepare the other 2 samples. We will discuss the chemistry behind the indigo vat and how you can set up and maintain one at home. Students will go home with 4 different patterns on cotton bandanas or napkins depending on your preference.
