Honoring 50 Years of Title IX

Title IX is a landmark federal law prohibiting sex discrimination in education; it affects everything from admissions and athletics to STEM training and sexual-harassment policies. AAUW is integral to its history. Join us in celebrating the 50th anniversary of Title IX with some special AAUW events. Click here to learn more about AAUW's Title IX work and to register for

June 15th webinar "Title IX and Transgender Students' Rights" or for

June 23rd webinar "AAUW's Title IX 50th Anniversary Virtual Celebration."

Arkansas has had its own Title IX journey. We are honored to have a branch member who served an important role in establishing Title IX, Nan Snow. As quoted in Veteran Feminists of America

"While with the U. S. Office of Personnel Management, I was appointed Federal Women's Program Coordinator for the five-state region of Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.  It was also about this time that "The Feminine Mystique" became a popular topic.  I was an immediate convert and later signed on to membership in NOW and the Arkansas Women's Political Caucus.  While some people refuse to see Arkansas in a progressive light, I believe we formed a strong cadre of feminist women in our state.  At the same time, as an affirmative action officer for the federal government, I began to work for minority rights and against racial prejudice, always remembering my positive experience as a young schoolgirl in Washington."

Your AAUW Membership

Message from Nell Matthews, Treasurer

It is time to renew your AAUW Little Rock membership. There are two ways to renew.

DIY: You can go to aauw.org and click on "Log In" in the upper right hand corner. This will take you to a page where you will create your new user ID (your email) and a password.  Once you have the ID and password, you can access your own account to update your information like a new phone number.  To renew, go to "My Affiliations".  You should see  "AAUW Little Rock".  Select "Renew" and follow the instructions.  It takes a bit of persistence to get to the pay page but you can pay your dues with a credit card there.

If this turns out to be more of a challenge or hassle than you want to deal with, you can send your check to me, Nell Matthews, Treasurer, and I will handle the database.  My address is 7200 Briarwood Drive, Little Rock, 72205.  Dues are $87.

Questions about your membership or your dues? Click here to email me.

Appreciation to all who have already renewed your dues!

Women's March: Bans Off Our Bodies Protest

May 14
Little Rock, State Capitol Steps

The leak of a draft opinion in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case suggests that the Supreme Court may overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade decision and take away a fundamental right that Americans have held for almost 50 years.

AAUW LR members participated in the Little Rock protest event by an affiliate of the National Women's March. The national AAUW office encourages AAUW members to participate in their local events to support Reproductive Justice.

AAUW Little Rock is a founding member of the Arkansas Coalition for Reproductive Justice.

Branch Dinner

May 20th
Whole Hog Cafe, Riverdale Shopping Center

The Branch Dinner celebrated our new branch officers and new members, and was a great prelude to the AAUW Arkansas State Convention which convened the following morning. Out-going Vice-President for Programs Debra Tillery was presented with a flower bouquet. Debra and Maria Jones were given best wishes for their new positions as Co-Presidents for AAUW Arkansas. Sandy Smith brought her granddaughter who will be starting college this year.

The group enjoyed visiting with each other and sharing a delicious bbq meal at the Whole Hog so much we stayed until restaurant closing time!
