3. Successful Community shredding event
4. Rallying against Gun Violence
5. Upcoming Community Programming
6. Fire Safety Bill Signing

1. Universal Childcare Legislation
As the Daily News and Gothamist reported, on Thursday I introduced 5 bills in the Council to bring universal childcare to NYC. Our city is in the midst of a childcare crisis: a recent study estimated that 93% of families with young children cannot afford center-based care for their infants and toddlers, and 80% cannot afford somewhat less expensive home-based care. We must make childcare equitable and affordable. I am thrilled to take action on this with the many other women on this historic majority-women City Council. It's a human rights issue and it's an issue of gender equality as women are disproportionately affected and pushed out of the workforce. You can read more about the push for childcare here
2. Celebrating Pride Month
June is Pride Month where we celebrate the beauty of the LGBTQ community while also remaining vigilant to the hate and discrimination towards them that still exists in our City and our country. I am proud that our historically diverse Council has 7 LGBTQ members, the most in Council history. Today, I was proud to join many of my colleagues and march in the Queens Pride Parade. It was a great celebration!
3. Successful Community Shredding Event
Over the past few months, we have heard from many constituents requesting a shredding event. On Friday, we were thrilled to work with the Chapin School to co-host a community shredding event on 84th and East End Ave. It was great to see hundreds of neighbors come out to shred their documents. These events are so important for the environment and to protect against identity theft. We will keep you posted on the next shredding event that we host!
4. Rallying Against Gun Violence
This weekend is National Gun Violence Awareness Weekend where we must all wear orange. On Thursday, I joined many Council colleagues and Mayor Adams on the steps of City Hall for a rally against gun violence. It was great to see so many advocates standing up in support of making the critical investments in our communities to root out gun violence. In addition to these investments and to promoting interagency cooperation between our Police and our mental health services agencies, we must also crackdown on illegal guns. As a former Commissioner of Consumer Affairs, I spearheaded initiatives to investigate potentially illegal and unlicensed sales of secondhand guns in New York City and we must continue those.
5. Upcoming Community Programming
With the summer approaching, our office has been hosting loads of fun community programming. Most notably coming up we have two more tango sessions in Carl Schurz and a movie night in Twenty Four Sycamores Park. See below for some details:
6. Fire Safety Bill Signing
In January our city faced a devastating tragedy with 17 people dying at the Twin Parks Fire in the Bronx. Sadly, much of the devastation could have been prevented as self-closing doors in the building malfunctioned. I was proud to co-sponsor a package of fire safety bills and on Wednesday it was great to join Mayor Adams and many of my colleagues colleagues as he signed the fire safety bills into law. The legislation will bolster inspections and penalties regarding malfunctioning self-closing doors and also target defective space heaters. This was a critical piece of legislation in making our city safer. You can see more from the bill signing here.
