Launch of the 5th edition of the contest Zoom on your Rights
"Look at the world through your rights" is the slogan of the fifth edition of the regional competition Zoom on your Rights. Every year, the contest invites children and adolescents from Latin America and the Caribbean to express their opinions and demands on issues that affect them, through art and technology, with the conviction that their voices can contribute to the changes that our societies need.
Zoom on your rights is much more than a contest: it´s an educational project. Each edition, informs and engages children, adolescents, communities and families on issues that are essential to their lives. So far, the contest has led to the production of a total of 460 videos with the participation of 2,100 children and adolescents.
In this year´s contest, partners and Save the Children country offices have been invited to take active part in the educational and communication strategies of the contest. This has been suggested with the aim of contributing to the strengthening of PASC programme partners and also for enabling a greater local reach of the Zoom on your rights contest in the different countries.
During the month of May, meetings to promote the contest were held with organisations led by children and adolescents such as Yo también tengo algo que decir, MOLACNATS and Rednnyas. The idea is that this group will become a permanent advisory team accompanying us at each stage. A first meeting was held for sharing the expectations and views on the opportunities of this initiative.

Swedish TV visits PASC partners in Guatemala
During the month of May, Swedish television visited Guatemala to produce a video documentary that will be broadcasted during an important Swedish fundraising event. The team accompanied Save the Children, CIPRODENI and REDMUCH covering activities and recording the situation of Guatemalan children.
The filmmakers followed Save the Children and CIPRODENI in a meeting with Congress and with the Family Commission, to understand the obstacles to having a Child and Adolescent Protection Law in Guatemala and identify joint strategies. They also visited a shelter for unaccompanied migrant children and interviewed migrant families and local authorities on the border with Honduras. Finally, they participated in Redmuch initiatives in Chiquimula and Esquipulas, including the girls' leadership school, positive discipline for parents and strengthening protection committees.
"We thank Save the Children Guatemala, Ciprodeni and REDMUCH for the warm welcome to their land and for putting together an exellent agenda for Swedish television. We hope that with this documentation of the situation of children in Guatemala and the work of civil society we can increase the awareness and support of the Swedish people for Guatemalan children" commented Ann Linnarsson, Director of PASC, who also had the opportunity to accompany the visit.

Equidad presents research on public investment in girls and adolescents
"As a result of the pandemic, many girls and adolescents stopped studying, some got married because of their parents' finances. I know girls who stayed in primary school because their families didn't have the resources," said Angela, a 13-year-old girl from Guatemala at the presentation of the "Study of the Public Budget for Girls and Adolescent Women. Cases from Brazil, Guatemala and Peru".
The study provides insights into the challenges for the exercise of equitable public investment from a gender perspective. It was presented at the second session of the Regional Dialogue on Investment in Children organised by Peru EQUIDAD.
"The incorporation of the gender perspective is very important for Save the Children, understanding that children in their diversity face specific needs based on their gender, and suffer risks, stereotypes and differentiated biases based on it. It is therefore important to generate evidence on these specific needs and how they could be addressed to ensure greater protection and access to rights," said Ann Linnarsson, Director of the Civil Society Support Programme.
The event was attended by representatives of our partners and four adolescent girls who presented their testimonies and shared the challenges faced by girls.
