1. Please join me in voting "yes" in the special election on Tuesday, if you haven't yet voted early or by mail. We are voting on whether to allow the City of Providence to issue Pension Obligation Bonds of up to $515 m, at an interest rate of 4.9% or lower. This will help us fund our pension liability. My support is based on the hard work of the pension working group which took a hard look at the options we have to meet our pension obligations. There are many steps that happen before Providence would issue the bonds. First, the voters must approve it. Second, the General Assembly must approve it (and I voted "yes" when the House passed the measure last week). Third, the City Council must give final approval. More information about the bond proposal is available here, on the Providence website.
2. I'm continuing to work on getting 5 gun safety bills to the floor for a vote. We have these bills ready, and have been working on them for years. They will:
1. Limit magazine capacity to 10 rounds
2. Raise age to purchase long guns and ammunition to 21
3. Regulate assault weapons
4. Require safe storage of weapons
5. Prohibit open carry of long guns in public.
**Please keep writing and showing up for gun safety.** There will be a gathering at the State House on June 11 at noon, part of a national day of action for gun safety, FB event here.
3. The budget should be posted in the next few weeks. I'm hoping we see more investment in housing and behavioral health care, a commitment to addressing Medicaid rates and meaningful investments in our communities.
5. I'm starting to see lots of campaign signs out, it is the season! If you already have one, please plant it in your yard again. And if you want one, let me know!
