Friday 10th June
Godfrey Tonks' solo exhibition,

"18 Views of Paradise"

Godfrey is a full time painter, having exhibited in the Medici Gallery, London, for many years.

The NLG is proud to say we are the only gallery to now represent Godfrey's new paintings.

His works can be seen in many countries around the world, with his earlier output mainly being in mixed media and pastels, though he now works mainly in oils.

Godfrey lives in Cumbria with his work focussing on the beautiful fells that he now calls home.

From time to time, GT’s earlier paintings can be seen listed at both Christies or Philips auction houses. These are typically European landscapes.

Some of Godfrey's more recent paintings have definite overtones of  (German) Expressionism, circa 1900+, some even exhibiting Fauvist tendencies.

Many of Godfrey's paintings unashamedly prioritise colour over subtle graduations, they're emotionally charged, there's an emphasis on the painting process rather than the creation necessarily of serene, self-contained form, however, that does not hold true throughout Godfrey's new body of work as I hope a few examples hear-in help articulate.

One of the crucial things about Expressionism is to overcome passive depictions of nature as per the Impressionists, instead to tap into an artist's inventory of emotional powers by employing bright, and at times, potentially brash colours and reduced forms, often edged with black to help separate out form, structure.

The vast majority of Godfrey’s new oil paintings have been painted this year, taking many forays into the Lake District National Park from his home near Penrith, sketch book in hand.

As he observed recently in our chats together, he will often pass a scene in the car, perfect in every way, then fail to find a car parking space within a mile or so, by which stage the lighting has changed and that magical scene that he had hoped to paint, was a distant memory!

Godfrey will be in the gallery this coming Saturday from midday should you wish to meet him.
