Nature-based solutions are approaches that respond to climate change by sustainably manage natural resources, in ways that provide co-benefits to local communities, biodiversity, and economies. These are a cost-effective approach to both capturing carbon from the atmosphere and building resilience to climate impacts. To provide a common ground for understanding the relevance of NbS, India Climate Collaborative and EdelGive Foundation have supported a report compiled by KPMG India, titled India Advancing with Nature: The current state of play of Nature-based Solutions, which addresses information asymmetry, and serves as an important step toward scaling funding for NbS in India.
This knowledge product draws from stakeholder consultations with various representatives from academia, government, research, and financial institutions, and civil society organisations, including rights-based organisations. Through these consultations, we were able to seek evidence-based insights on land-use NbS project development, financial sustainability, policy support, capacity building requirements, and the challenges to scaling up NbS in India.
We hope that the knowledge product inspires various actors — including donors, investors, businesses, implementing organisations, and policymakers — to take action towards implementing systems-level change in the NbS arena.
As an accompaniment to this report, we have created a supplementary read that elucidates the landscape of funding sources that caters to land-based NbS in India, including the public, private, and philanthropy. It explores the opportunities available to leverage and fund land-based NbS in India.
