The mystery of the Trinity that we celebrate on Holy Trinity Sunday is a beautiful reminder of the importance of community. God has revealed Godself to us not simply as One but also as Many, as Three Persons in perfect unity with one another. God’s very nature is communal.

The church did not arrive at this understanding of God overnight. While the Persons of the Trinity do appear in Scripture, the doctrine of the Trinity is never clearly or systematically laid out in our holy texts. Last week we celebrated Pentecost, and the readings for the day at least mentioned the word “Pentecost”—but not so with the Trinity. You won’t find that word in this week’s readings. This relational understanding of God was something the church had to work out over time as early Christians wrestled with these texts and, guided by the Spirit, eventually arrived at the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds. God’s communal nature had to be learned.

Community is important, and as we also take time to celebrate Pride this coming Sunday, I’m reminded how crucial it is that we continue to learn community. Scripture never explicitly says, “Thou shalt welcome LGBTQ+ people.” The Bible never explicitly says, “God loves queer and trans people as much as anyone else.” But as we have grown to learn more and more what it means to be a community, we have been led to reevaluate our beliefs and our selves. We celebrate Pride this Sunday because when God tells us to love our neighbor, we’ve learned that means everyone.

As imperfect humans, we’ll never have the perfect union that the Trinity exhibits, but the more we expand our community and bring others into this unity, the more we come to be like God. The more we learn to invite the many into our midst, the more we learn about the communal nature of God.

COVID Safety

LMC is committed to the safety and wellbeing of those who attend worship. Given the rise in COVID cases and the contagiousness of current COVID strains, we encourage anyone who attends worship to consider using N95 or KN95 masks. We will provide masks for those who do not have them. The city of Chicago COVID advisory level is currently HIGH. When the city moves the advisory level back to LOW, we will invite everyone to be mask optional in the sanctuary.

Juneteenth Celebration on June 17

Our Juneteenth celebration is returning this year with music, food, games, and more! Join LMC’s Faith + Justice Team on Friday, June 17, at 4pm on the front lawn. In the event of inclement weather, we will move indoors to the Fellowship Hall and Multipurpose Room. Masks are required indoors.

LMC in the Chicago Pride Parade

My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.
—John 15:12
In June, we celebrate God's love for all God's children, for we are all made in God's image, regardless of our sexual orientation and/or gender identity. LMC is happy to celebrate this unconditional love at the Chicago Pride Parade on Sunday, June 26. We will be marching in the parade with the Chicago Coalition of Welcoming Churches. The tentative schedule is to worship together at 10am and then take the Brown Line to the meeting location before the parade steps off at noon. All are invited! Please reach out to either Sarah Swagler or Kurt Matthesius if you have questions and to let us know if you plan on marching with us!
