June 2022 Newsletter

Message from the President

Dear Community Leaders, Friends, and Supporters,

I have the honor of serving as the Junior League of Tallahassee President for the 2022-2023 League year. I want to start by saying thank you for your continued commitment to the Junior League of Tallahassee. Your support allows us to expand our impact and make meaningful changes in the lives of children and families through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. I would also like to thank our Immediate Past President, Katie Britt Williams, who led our League this past year with enthusiasm and #massiveaction - I have big shoes to fill!

This League Year, my focus is on the JLT Impact. I am looking forward to writing you each month about the impact our Leaguers are making here in Tallahassee. Though the League year has just begun, the 2022-2023 Leadership team has already jumped into planning and preparing for the year ahead. Our goals are big, but our members are eager to begin and step up to the challenge.

To start, we are entering the League year with the full launch of our new JLT logo redesign! Over the past year, you may have noticed we have been slowly switching our logo and colors to match our parent association, the Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI). We are excited to have fully #embracethered!

We are also thrilled to announce our new Jill Pope Community Partner: Sabal Palm Elementary School. I cannot wait to see the impact we are able to make over the next two years with their incredible Community Partnership School staff, administration, and teachers.

Finally, our  League is proud to be the recipient of AJLI’s Public Policy & Advocacy award in May. This international award recognizes the work our Public Affairs committee has executed over the past two years in launching a certificate training track and creating the JLT Advocacy Plan.

I invite you to continue to follow along with the impact the JLT will make in our community this year. If you would like more information about partnering with or supporting JLT as this fiscal year unfolds, please contact me at president@jltallahassee.org. We cannot do our work without your continued support.

In Service,
Becca Piers
2022-2023 JLT President

Bringing Recognition Back to Tallahassee!

Recently, the Junior League of Tallahassee was the recipient of the 2022 AJLI Public Policy & Advocacy Award! The Public Affairs Committee advocates for legislation and policy initiatives that align with the League’s mission to ensure children and families have access to basic needs.

In 2020, the committee created an Advocacy Certificate Training Track to provide Members with the resources necessary to successfully advocate on behalf of the League, strategic partners, and community initiatives driving the League’s Mission. 28 Junior League of Tallahassee Members completed the certificate training, which has allowed the League to significantly expand their advocacy efforts in areas from advocating for menstrual products in K-12 public schools to ending human trafficking in Florida to creating educational programming surrounding voter education and advocacy.

Preparing for Summer Activities with WFSU

Recently, members joined together with WFSU's Education Department to prepare for the Summer Challenge. The Summer Challenge provides upwards of 1,000 educational bags filled with resources from partners across the community to offer free pre-registered day programs with hands-on activities on Fridays this summer.

Leadership is an action, not a position.

On June 4, 2022, the 2022-2023 Junior League Tallahassee's Leadership gathered at Sabal Palm Elementary to host the Leadership Summit for all leadership (Management Team, Board of Directors, Chairs, and Chair-Elects) to train and plan for being leaders beyond their position.

In addition, the Summit included a delegation segment and a thoughtful discussion on member retention. To close out, all attendees received a tour of the Sabal Palm Community Partnership School, JLT's incoming Community Partner.

We can't wait to see what impact these individuals guide in our community.
