President's Message

We are always excited at Business Port Stephens to launch a newsletter with a Business Breakfast Event invite. Our flagship event is moving slightly on the radar further afield this month to Medowie, to become more inclusive for our members from our very large LGA.  We invite all members and non-members within the Raymond Terrace, Seaham, Tomago, Williamtown, Medowie and the Tilligery Peninsular to join us at Medowie for our renowned event. There are important messages being delivered at this event surrounding sustainability within the business sector.
Thank you to all our Elvis die hard fans who supported the recent PCYC fundraising event at Nelson Bay and Raymond Terrace.  With $2,000.00 raised, it was a great night and enjoyed by all.  To be able support the cinema's, a local organisation and eat choc tops in the process is a big win for all.

Welcome to our new members for the month of June, it is a pleasure to be welcoming you to the BPS family. Our membership continues to grow with 220 members and we continue to work throughout the LGA consulting on the benefits of Business Port Stephens.

I look forward to catching up with  you all at the Business Breakfast in  August.
Mel Turner
President

Welcome to our newest members!

WELCOME to Dee and Glenn Short from Tanilba House!
Tanilba House is a state heritage listed homestead built back in 1831 and is set on 3 acres of beautiful, mature gardens with sweeping water views of Port Stephens. Convict built from local stone, we offer wedding ceremonies & receptions, high teas & other functions.
We bought Tanilba in March 2018 and we still can't quite believe that we live in such a beautiful, historic house in this lovely unspoilt paradise overlooking Port Stephens. We decided to jump in boots and all and since then have been dedicated to her restoration, maintenance and beautification and we get so much satisfaction from seeing her blossom under our care. We thoroughly enjoy sharing our beautiful old girl with others and love being an important part of peoples weddings and other special events. We give all our events our personal focus and attention to make sure they are as perfect as possible.

Karin Hensley from Angel Tots
Angel Tots having a fun day out at Oakvale Wildlife Park
Tell us about yourself and Angel Tots:
My husband Steven and I bought Gumnuts, in May 2018. We changed the name to Angel Tots Early Learning Centre. This is our only Centre and we love every moment of this adventure. We are a 56 place centre and have an amazing team of Educators welcoming the children every day. Steven is our handy man - sometimes this is a full time job! I am a teacher by profession, but also have a qualification as a Laboratory Tech. Steven and I have owned our own business since 2000. This was in medical supplies though.

If a new parent enrolled their child at Angel Tots what could they expect?
Although it takes a little while to settle in, our aim is to let each new little one feel included and loved from day one. Our hope is that the parents will also quickly feel part of the Angel Tots community.

Tell us about your philosophy at Angel Tots?
To summarise: It takes a village to raise a child! Something new happens every day.

What’s the best thing about operating a child care centre in Port Stephens?
It is having a positive impact on children younger than 5. I love this age. The honesty and cuteness is to die for.

Shout out to your favourite businesses in Port Stephens: dining, shopping, services…

Power creative videos

An exciting opportunity has arisen from one of our members Power Creative to create professional member videos. These videos will be professionally interviewed, edited and available to use across all your promotional channels.

What is involved:
🎥 A director/interviewer will interview you for 15-20 minutes inside of a 30/45 min time slot at a selected location (all interviews conducted in same location).
🎥 This raw footage will then go through a 2 hour editing process.
🎥 You can add your own videos/photos as overlay content (alternatively you can add on additional filming if preferred at your own cost directly with Power Creative).
🎥 The end result is a professionally produced video of 3 – 5 minutes.
🎥 Use it on your website, YouTube, FB, Insta, send to potential clients – the possibilities are endless!
🎥 Investment – approx. $900 per video (incl gst).
🎥 There is a minimum requirement of ten members for production to go ahead.
🎥 Allow 30-60 days from filming for editing process and time with each interviewee.

SMEs at the Astra Aerolab in Williamtown

BUILDING A DEFENCE HUB IN THE HUNTER

Tim Owen, Chair - Hunter Defence Taskforce recently spoke with Defence Connect about how the Hunter Defence Task Force and the Hunter Defence Conference are equipping Australian defence SMEs with the knowledge and expertise to enter the defence supply chain and expand their offerings internationally.

In particular, they spoke about the work being done to continue to bring SMEs and primes together at Astra Aerolab at Williamtown and how this highly secure and innovative precinct is creating a very strong air-combat ecosystem in the region.

Proposed airport changes:
Community consultation

Proposed airspace design, including new flight paths, developed for Williamtown (Newcastle Airport).

Newcastle Airport is located at the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Base Williamtown. Defence, as the owner of RAAF Base Williamtown, provides air traffic control services to both the civilian and military aircraft at Williamtown.

In 2015, the Civil Aviation Safety Authority Office of Airspace Regulation and Defence conducted a Joint Aeronautical Study of Williamtown Airspace, focused on improving its safety, efficiency, and future operability of the Williamtown airspace, recognising the growth in civilian air traffic and the need to maintain safe separation with next generation military aircraft. The study recommended implementation of separated arrival and departure flight paths for civilian aircraft, so they can continue to fly safely and efficiently alongside the fast jet military aircraft that are based at Williamtown.

A proposed airspace design, including new flight paths, has been developed. This proposed design takes into consideration safety requirements, findings from the community engagement activities undertaken in 2021, as well as Australian and International flight path design standards and operational constraints.

The proposed design has now been made available for public consultation. Throughout June and July 2022, Airservices Australia will provide the community with the opportunity to learn about the new airspace design and provide feedback on any aspects of interest.

They will be hosting a series of community consultation sessions; the schedule of dates and venues for these sessions is available on their website below. This website also contains detailed information on what the proposed airspace design could mean for you and other communities surrounding Newcastle Airport.

Should you have any questions, please contact the Community Engagement team at communityengagement@airservicesaustralia.com

Port Stephens Council’s newly developed draft Communication and Engagement Strategy is on public exhibition for community feedback. The Strategy reflects Council’s commitment to inform and improve community awareness of programs, activities and services. More importantly, it shows Council’s commitment to listen to the community and use their ideas to help shape the future direction of Port Stephens.

Highlights of the Communication & Engagement Strategy 2022-2027 include:
• Ensuring diverse engagement opportunities enabling time for considered thought and contribution.
• Community input into design of engagement planning.
• Continued investment in the growth and improvement of Council’s website.
• Building on the use of social media.
• Maximising use of livestreaming and video.

Council want to check in with the community to make sure feedback has been understood and the proposed direction aligns with community expectations. The documents are currently on exhibition through to 5pm on 15 July 2022.

We encourage you to share your thoughts on the draft Communication & Engagement Strategy and complete the online survey here
