The Grace On Which We Stand
This Sunday is Trinity Sunday where we recognize and celebrate our God 3 in 1. Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Creator, Redeemer, Sustainer. We will hear about our Truine God through the early Christian Communities, specifically the early church in Rome and Paul’s letter to the Romans. And we will find out how all of this relates to us, today and our experience of Christian Community and the church.

I hope you will join me on Sunday, online or in person. No matter how you join, I hope you find a way to connect with others! We are one in the Body of Christ, after all.

Peace be with you!

Pastor Lori

As this newsletter is distributed, Pastor Lori, Lionel Smith, Florence Metcalf and I are all in LaVista, Nebraska (a suburb of Omaha) for the gathering of the Great Plains Annual Conference this week.

This will be our first in-person session of Annual Conference since 2019!   Lionel and Florence are Woodlawn’s lay members of the Annual Conference, while Lori and I are clergy members.

Besides setting the budget which impacts our local congregation’s Mission Share amount each year, the Great Plains Annual Conference (GPAC) approves the ordination and election of new clergy members of the annual conference, elects leadership for our conference and district committees and boards, and conducts other business of the conference.

This year, there will be the first votes to approve those congregations who have chosen to disaffiliate from the United Methodist Church to join the newly formed Global Methodist Church.  These actions are taken with a good amount of sadness, and I would ask for prayers for congregations such as Woodlawn who remain in the UMC, as well as our brothers and sisters in some congregations who are choosing to leave.

The final action of each annual conference session is the fixing of appointments, which will take place Saturday morning as the Bishop officially appoints pastors to their congregations for the coming year.  Both Lori and I plan to return to Woodlawn and are excited to begin our new appointive year on July 1. This summer, at our next Church Council (date to be determined), Lionel and Florence will share highlights from the conference session.

Until Sunday,

A Word From Our Youth Director

“The Kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which someone found and hid; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.’” – Matthew 13:44

Have you ever thought about all of the amazing things that are hidden around us? Some of them are hidden on purpose – things that are private, secret, or things that we just want to keep secure.

Yet other things have always been hidden as part of creation – things that are just waiting to be discovered.

Today, our youth are exploring one of these treasures hidden in creation – the Alabaster Caverns.  Caves offer a wealth of beauty, hidden right below our feet.  At Alabaster Caverns, our youth will have the opportunity to explore the wonders of the only gypsum show cave in the US and the largest natural gypsum cave in the world.  It is truly a one of a kind treasure!

As we explore the cave, take some time to think about the treasures around you and give thanks for all of the wonders that God provides!

Thanks,

Bryce Fuhrmann
Youth Director

Fairytales are full of fantasy and imagination. We love them because they take what could be real and add extraordinary circumstances. But what if there was a story where the extraordinary circumstances were real? Could a story like this exist? This month, we are going to look at the story of Ruth to see how God truly writes the best stories for us, full of companions, hope, boldness, and the knowledge that God is always taking care of us!

Camp is next week! Several email updates have been sent out. If you have any questions about Camp Horizon or any of the elementary camps, let me know. I am so excited to hang out with these kids at one of the greatest places ever for the week!

VBS Registration is now open! Cost is $10 ($11 if you pay online) and this includes a week of fun and a t-shirt! If you are a volunteer or would like to volunteer, you and your children can come for free! I am still looking for some volunteers. If you would like to volunteer, please let me know.

See you soon!

Moment for Mission

Peace with Justice
UMC Special Sunday offering

United Methodists relate to this special Sunday by seeking peaceful solutions, creating and supporting peace-related ministries in their conference and learning about peaceful and just efforts around the world. Our social principles call us to love our enemies, seek justice, and serve as reconcilers of conflict. We insist that the first moral duty of all nations is to work together to resolve by peaceful means every dispute that arises between or among them.

Donations for this special Sunday support programs and ministries to educate, equip and mobilize actions in support of identified economic, health, and gender justice priorities. Each Annual Conference has a Peace with Justice Coordinator developing local social justice ministries. Fifty percent of the offering remains in our annual conference to support this ministry. Your gift, joined with the gifts of others, makes a significant impact in the lives of individuals and communities.
Giving remains critical to our church’s mission and ministry. You may mail contributions to the church at 431 S. Woodlawn Blvd. Derby, KS  67037 or
go to www.woodlawnumc.net and click the “Giving” link to give online.

THURSDAY 7 AM MEN’S BREAKFAST AND BOOK STUDY

MEN! The TMBABS has moved to 7 a.m. and will resume on July 7th (Get it? 7 on the 7th!) for breakfast and the beginning of our review of Tim Johnson’s “Finding God in the Questions: A Personal Journey.”  Dr. Johnson’s diverse medical career included clinical practice, education, and TV (ABC) reporting. He continues as an associate minister at his local Massachusetts church. If you have ever wondered how a Christian faith can survive in a secular culture, this work may answer some of your questions.

This ad hoc group is aimed at men who enjoy a hearty breakfast: the breakfast always concludes by 8 A.M.*  A volunteer reads excerpts from the book while the group eats, interrupts and debates. Any donations in the past have been given to the Angel House Orphanage and School in Tanzania. This small group would welcome an influx of newcomers. Some of the regulars think the food is safe to eat! Call Frank O’Donnell (788-3224) or the church office (788-1507) for more information, or just show up at the Worship Center kitchen at 7 A.M. on Thursday, July 7th.

*Leaving early for work or the golf course is okay.

The Derby Food Pantry is blessed to have so many churches, businesses, and individuals that support it. We are seeing increased use of our food pantry. We are currently serving over 40 families a month. The United States Postal Service Drive in May gave us over 1900 pounds of food, and then on our 3rd Saturday food distribution, we gave out over 1500 pounds of food to 31 families. Thank you so much for your continued support. Without your help we could not serve as many families!

Also, you may have noticed, Woodlawn UMC now has a Blessing Box out by our prayer fence! Matt Archer made us a Blessing Box out of the wood from the fence that was replaced. The Derby Food Pantry is now stocking the Blessing Box with food for anyone who needs it.
