What's the benefit for engineers / consultants?
Dear <<First Name>>,

Welcome to our July Newsletter.  We have also launched a newsletter via LinkedIn, so apologies if you get this twice.  Please manage this with your subscription preferences.

QUT Capstone team

The Queensland University of Technology, Capstone team have delivered the next generation of the Knowledge Canvas™ and Knowledge Pulse™. We will be looking for Beta testers when that is fully launched (thanks to Carl Foster) - stay tuned.

Case Studies

Holcim, our first case study, tested the Knowledge Canvas™ and Pulse products on an innovative project - installing a robot to weld cages used for making concrete products – called the ‘Cage Machine’. The Cage Machine was being tested and commissioned at one of their production facilities and Andrew was starting to plan for installations at other facilities.

 Andrew Heley's testimonial:

"The tools provide a good insight and it all makes sense.

There is value in the Canvas, as it provides a great conduit for ongoing conversations and would be most beneficial to use through the entire lifecycle of the project.

It is good that the survey's can be deployed in a flexible manner - to suit a variety of circumstance and people's ability to engage.

The tools would definitely be useful for other projects."

Melbourne Water, our 2nd case study, tested the Knowledge Canvas™ and Pulse on the Critique phase of the Confined Space Entry Simulator's development, to help Gavin plan for the next phase of its deployment.

Gavin Kenny's testimonial:

"Using the Innowise framework focus’ the user’s attention on capturing knowledge through the innovation lifecycle. It introduces new concepts that don’t appear in traditional project plans eg: trust, energy, knowledge, collaboration etc.

The Knowledge Canvas helps focus your thoughts and ideas and be concise in exactly what you are trying to achieve.

The Knowledge Pulse questions are clear and enable feedback to be received in a constructive manner, focusing conversations on opportunities for improvement.

Our third and final is in the making and is completely different with a focus on setting up a new team.

Outcomes of these case studies include minor improvements to our products with the key being a demonstration of the versatility and flexibility of our approach.

The Benefit of InnoWise™ for designers / consultants

I have recently been asked by a wise colleague about how InnoWise™ might benefit those in the design space, such as engineering consultants and to unpack the InnoWise™ framework and tools a little for clarity. First some statistics to establish why then the how and what.

Did you know:

  1. Only 9% of organisation's are ready to address knowledge management, yet 75% believe knowledge management (KM) is important for their success (2020, Deloitte)
  2. Less than 20% of organisation's are at a level of KM maturity above being classified as having an ad hoc approach (2020, APQC)
  3. Only 6% of executives are satisfied with their innovation performance (2010, McKinsey)
  4. 95% of all product innovations fail (HBS, Professor Clayton Christensen)
  5. 82% of organisation's run innovation in the same way as other improvements (2015, Accenture)
  6. 60% of organisation's have difficulty learning from their mistakes (2015, Accenture)
  7. I could go on, but I think you get the story.

The InnoWise™ framework is a systematic, science-based methodology that describes the relationship between innovation and knowledge processes. It is designed to guide you through the development of an innovation - from its first thought bubble which is the Form phase - to its final Critique phase, where you undertake a critical review of the solution as well as the new knowledge.

InnoWise™ is different to other systems or processes as it starts where ideation stops and is designed specifically for innovation and knowledge to be managed together. The measures are also unique and have been developed to monitor behaviours that can interrupt progress. By managing knowledge consciously and using measures suited to innovation, your innovations are more likely to succeed and your organisation is more likely to grow in capability (from that new knowledge).

  1. The Knowledge Canvas™ is designed to guide you through the InnoWise™ process
  2. The Knowledge Pulse™ is a survey based system to provide measures and insights
  3. The InnoWise™ checklist is a simple questionnaire to find what stage the initiative is at.

The benefit for consultants is to reduce the risk of innovating and increase knowledge development and retention by doing the following:

  1. Use the InnoWise™ Process or Canvas to articulate how you are going to manage innovation
  2. Use the Canvas to share progress
  3. Use the Canvas and InnoWise™ process to develop a strategy that addresses knowledge
  4. Use the Pulse to find road blocks before too much time and resources are spent or to compare options from a different perspective.

As the saying goes, "Innovate or Die". Another fun fact: half of the S&P 500 are expected to be replaced every 10 years. The InnoWise™ process has been designed to help mitigate the risk of innovation and to help make the process of creating something new, easier and more likely to succeed.

Connecting Innovation with Knowledge

What’s up – next quarter

Our research continues with the case studies and with in depth interviews to try to better understand how trust and energy can be measured and managed and to test the validity and value of the InnoWise process.

We'll also be finalising the Holcim case study with an interactive workshop to 'Critique' their progress and help them with planning next steps.

The launch of the next gen Canvas and Pulse.

We are excited to be slowly progressing from start-up to accelerate.
