June Meeting: Kelsi & John from Bistitchual Yarn Shop

BiStitchual began as a queer, Canadian crafty podcast in June 2020. John and Kelsi started this podcast to talk more about queerness, mental health, and disability, both in the fibre arts community and the world at large. They wanted to build a community that would not only embrace, but celebrate, uplift, and connect with folks who recognize and relate to these identities and intersections. As the podcast grew in popularity and they began to foster an online community, they realized - what better way to celebrate and uplift queer and Canadian fibre artists than through a yarn store!  The Bistitchual store was opened in November 2020, and their mission is to make Canadian and queer indie dyers and makers more accessible to the world.

25th Anniversary Make-along (TKG25MAL):
A Commemorative Pattern
Knitwear designer Sally Melville was the first guest speaker at our first guild meeting 25 years ago.  After the 25th Anniversary Knit Night Party at the Faux Frolic, Sally decided to create a pattern to commemorate this occasion. The final details are being completed, but we thought you'd like a sneak peek at some of the details, including a photo! This pattern will be available on Ravelry and the members of the Toronto Knitters Guild will receive a discount code.

If you'd like to start raiding or augmenting your stash, here are some details from Sally:
Because the shape is simple and generous, it’s an easy style to wear—alone with a pair of wider pants, or layered over something longer and with slimmer pants.

I used 8 colours, and I explain their relationship to each other (and the colour wheel) in the pattern. You could, of course, make this with any number of colours! The only principle to apply (from my knitting mentor, Lee Andersen) is once is a mistake, twice is a problem, three or more times is a design. Whatever number of colours you use, make sure each one is visible at least 3 times.

The garment will be offered in 3 sizes (XS-S, M-L, 1X-2X), with finished bust measurements of 46 (54, 62)”. You will need at least 1200 (1400, 1600) total yards of fingering weight. (The yarns I used—plus their individual yardages—are listed in the pattern.)
If you're resistant to all that knitting for a fingering weight sweater, consider the following:

  • Because there is so much fingering available, finding a fun mix of colours will be easy. (Chances are you already have some of what you need in your stash?)
  • Knitting with fingering yarns is very easy on the hands.
  • Because so much of it is tightly spun, it hangs beautifully.
  • Fingering weight garments can be worn in all seasons.
  • And don’t you, every once in a while, love a project that requires a lot of knitting?

The rules, suggestions and timing of the TKG25MAL are listed in the May newsletter and can be found in our member's hub here.

Annual General Meeting Summary:
Changes to Members of the Board
The Toronto Knitters Guild Annual General Meeting took place on Monday May 30th. At the meeting, four new board members were elected, and it was announced that a number of the current board members will be stepping down after this year.

We would like to express our deep gratitude to the following members who will be leaving the board this year: Cheryl DeVille (Director, Community Engagement), Ali Moenck (Vice President), Hannah Phoenix (Content Coordinator), and Simone Sherriff (Social Media Coordinator). They have all served the board with tremendous enthusiasm and great expertise and will all be sorely missed.

Our current President, Tammy Elliott, is also concluding her role as President and will take on the role of Past-President next year, supporting the incoming President and the board.

The four newly elected members of the board include two members who joined the board partway through this year as appointed Board Members and have now been officially elected following the AGM: Kristen Pytlowana (Registrar) and Joanna Fromstein (Newsletter Editor).

Two additional new Board members were also elected: Genevieve Chornenki and Angeline Mair. We hope you'll join us in welcoming the new Board members. They bring a fresh perspective and new ideas and we are confident they'll find their groove quickly!
Volunteers Needed! Code of Conduct Review Committee
The TKG will be undergoing a review of our Code of Conduct to see if any changes or improvements are necessary, and ensuring that the rules of conduct cover both physical, in-person meetings and online events adequately. We would like to have the input of you, the members, on this initiative. If you have an interest in participating on the Code of Conduct Review Committee, please contact us to let us know.
Survey on Meeting Formats Reminder

The close of our 2021-22 year marks a second year of delivering virtual programming and the TKG Board is seeking to get your feedback on the 2021-22 year and to hear your preferred format for monthly meetings and activities for the 2022-23 Guild year.

This information will be used by the TKG Board to put together our programme and events for next year and the results will also be communicated with the membership in July.

The deadline to complete the survey is Friday, June 17th, 2022

Take me to the survey!
