Why not have a go entering this year’s show on Sunday 24th July 2022  [from 12 noon]

Take on the Royal British Legion's Poppy Ride and cycle through the Shropshire countryside alongside veterans

The Royal British Legion is encouraging people to get in the saddle and take part in its third Poppy Ride event to help support service and ex-service personnel and their families.
The popular cycling event will take place on Sunday 19th June 2022.   Poppy Ride will start and finish at the RBL’s Battle Back Centre in Lilleshall, a specialist recovery facility that supports wounded, injured and sick service personnel to return to active duty or make a smooth transition to life outside of the Armed Forces.
The ride has three distance options; 35km, 88km and 148km.  The routes are professionally planned and chip timed so participants, both novice or experienced, can expect a professional sporting event.   First time event riders or sportive enthusiasts can enjoy routes that all wind through the picturesque Shropshire countryside and provide an opportunity to ride alongside veterans.
This really is a ride not to be missed!  All three distance options will start and finish at the Battle Back Centre, a specialist recovery facility that supports wounded, injured and sick service personnel to either return to active duty or make a smooth transition to life outside of the Armed Forces.

Taking part in Poppy Ride and fundraising for the RBL, ensures that veterans like Lyndon Chatting-Walters get the support they need.
Lyndon Chatting-Walters was told he may never walk again as a result of the injuries he sustained in combat.   A decade on, he took part in Mission Himalaya – a high altitude expedition to the Himalayas.
Lying in an apple orchard in Afghanistan after being blown almost 20 metres through the air by an IED, Lyndon Chatting-Walters realised he was being shot at by both sides.
The 18-year-old combat engineer had been part of the group sent to rescue ambushed Royal Irish fighters who had rolled their vehicle while being attacked.
Chatting-Walters says it was while driving back to base that they came under Taliban fire again.
Everyone presumed I was dead because I wasn't there.   "It was dark. The Royal Irish were returning fire into the orchard where we were ambushed from - I don't remember doing this, but the lads said I got my flashlight out and flashed that I was in there.  They pushed through and grabbed me."
His injuries were extensive: shattered right heel, broken left leg, and shrapnel injuries to his thighs and groin.   He'd broken his back in four places, broken his ribs, had lung contusions, broken his arm and his jaw. The doctors assumed he was paralysed.
Back in the UK and told his injuries were too bad to even step foot on a UK military base, Chatting-Walters had to accept that his military career was over.
He was still only 21 and says he was "a total wreck".   He'd signed up to the services just before his sixteenth birthday and had wanted to be in the military for as long as he- or his mum- could remember.     Now a future filled with operations, rehabilitation, and what felt like never-ending pain stretched before him.   He spiralled into a pattern of destructive behaviour, getting into fights and trouble with the police. He can now admit he was a borderline alcoholic.
"I was at an all-time low," he adds. "[That was when] I went to Battle Back."

Poppy Ride is a fantastic way for people to show their support for the Royal British Legion and have some fun at the same time.  Everyone taking part will be raising vital funds for service personnel, veterans and their families who are struggling through hardships, injuries and bereavements.  We remain dedicated to our mission of creating better futures for all the Armed Forces community and maintaining its legacy for the generations to come.

All RBL events operate in-line with Covid-19 safety guidelines at the time. Should the RBL have to cancel an event due to Covid-19 restrictions, places will be either transferred to another event, or fully refunded.

Entry for all distances is £32 and includes an exclusive Poppy Ride medal.

New online coaching service for people who struggle with reading
It’s taken for granted that we all learned to read and write at school, however there are many local people who struggle with this essential life skill. Just imagine how your life would be if you couldn’t read forms or letters, follow medicine instructions, or read a new recipe?
Free, confidential, one-to-one help
Read Easy Shropshire Hills matches up adults who want to learn to read with a trained reading coach and they work together through reading manuals, in private, at a time to suit them both. It’s as easy as that and its free!
What’s important is that everyone can learn at their own pace without feeling rushed. There’s no pressure or targets or exams to worry about and no reminders of what it was like at school.
Before the pandemic all coaching sessions were held face-to-face in quiet locations such as cafes and libraries, but out of necessity we have had to find new ways to keep on coaching.
Online coaching, using Zoom, has been so successful and convenient for many reading pairs, that we have decided to use it to reach a much wider population. New readers are provided with a tablet if they don’t have access to a computer. It is set up by Read Easy beforehand so it can be used without any computer knowledge or keyboard skills. However, Zoom isn’t for everyone and for some of our readers coaching by WhatsApp or phone are better options.
We will continue to offer face-to-face coaching to people who would prefer to meet in person if there is a suitable local venue.
Jay Blades proves it’s never too late to learn
Jay Blades, presenter of BBC's Repair Shop, finds reading a challenge. He concealed his inability to read until he was in his 30s, after he struggled to learn to read as a child and compares looking at words on a page to a 'book of ants'. Jay, 51, has been learning to read online with Read Easy in Birmingham and his story was shown on BBC TV earlier this year.

How to get in touch
Learning to read can literally be life changing. People grow enormously in confidence, self-esteem and independence as well as being able to navigate the world of the written word.
If you would like to find out more, or you know someone who would like to learn to read contact Amana Winchester on 07707 762653 or email her shcoordinator@readeasy.org.uk.
