Hello Bluegrass Lovers! 

It’s great to be back playing together and listening to live bluegrass music—indoors and out! The Idaho Bluegrass Association (IBA) has been busy! Check out the activities below, get updates by signing up for the IBA mailing list, and help support bluegrass in Idaho.



 

UPCOMING EVENTS 
 

Weiser Banjo Contest, Open-Mic, and Bluegrass in the Park
It’s back! IBA is proud to be organizing the 2022 Banjo Contest in Weiser Idaho. We have planned a full week of fun:

  • Open-mic events – open to all, June 17
  • Intermediate and Advanced Banjo Contests, June 18 and 19
  • Banjo-Fiddle Contest and the Famous Pie Auction, June 19
  • Bluegrass in the Park at Memorial Park in downtown Weiser, June 21, featuring Dry Buck, Wooley Buggers, and Chicken Dinner Road.

We are still looking for sponsors and volunteers for the Banjo Contest!

 

IBA Concert Series

On July 7, our first concert of this series will feature the nationally acclaimed bluegrass band Never Come Down, winner of the Rockygrass (2019) and Freshgrass (2021) band competitions. Bluegrass Festival at Tamarack Resort
Bikes, Beers, and Bluegrass Festival at Tamarack Resort—September 4, 1:00 to 5:00pm. Featuring High Pine Whiskey Yell and Jughandle Parade. We’ll post information through email updates and on the website.



 

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS!
 

Top Pickin’ Bluegrass Citizen of the Year, 2022

Awarded annually to an individual or a non-profit or for-profit business for outstanding contributions to the presentation, preservation, or promotion of bluegrass music in Idaho, this honor includes a plaque and a small cash prize. Please submit your nominations, and the IBA Board will vote to select the next recipient. Jason Homey was the first recipient, 2020, and Gary Eller the second, 2021. Tough acts to follow, but we’re looking forward to the next slate of candidates!

Criteria for consideration:

  • Close connection with Idaho by residence, presence, or impact on the Idaho bluegrass community
  • Duration and degree of contribution

RECENT AND ONGOING EVENTS 

Idaho Springfest

What a great day at JUMP on May 14! – ten bands, square dancing, jamming, and an opportunity to see old friends and make new ones. Big thanks to our VP Joe Gobel for organizing the event and also to the volunteers who made this event a great success. IBA Open Mic

IBA Open Mic is held the 4tth Monday of each month at Ironwood Bar and Grill. It’s always great fun to watch practiced performers and impromptu band “scrambles.” Bring your instrument and voice, because we finish off the night jamming together. Join us! Weekly Jams

A big thank you to Jason Homey for organizing and conducting the weekly Beginner’s Jam. Jason will be taking a summer break (after June 7 jam) and plans to start up again in September after Labor Day. Look for Jason’s email on details. The IBA-sponsored weekly Intermediate Jam will continue this summer if there is sufficient interest. Look for updates on the website and in our Community Events email.



 

MEMBERSHIP
 

Please renew your membership for 2022. Join Us - Idaho Bluegrass Association

We ask for a donation of $20 for a single membership (though additional donations beyond the $20 are welcomed). Your dollars make it possible for IBA to continue offering the types of programs listed above and also providing scholarships to our music camps. We are a 501c3 non-profit charitable organization and 100% volunteer run.


Obituary

Gary Mitchell long time member of Idaho  Bluegrass association  died Feb.25, 2022
Gary was a terrific musician playing Mandolin, Guitar and Tenor Banjo. He was active in the Old Time Fiddlers Association, Idaho Bluegrass Association, Boise  Banjo Band, Betty Adam's Gospel Group etc..He had a great sense of humor and was always fun to be around.

We welcome your suggestions on how we can improve IBA. Please email us idahobluegrassasssociation@gmail.com We would love to hear from you. We are particularly interested in how to be more effective in engaging Idaho pickers beyond the Treasure Valley area.
