Stoney Creek Current

Volume XV Issue 5 - June 2022

Our Summer Reading Program is in full swing and you can keep up to date on the activities all around the county at our Summer Reading Landing Page. Due to space constraints some of our events are ticketed so make sure to check the program information and keep up with the events on Facebook so you don't miss out!

We are still planning for our future library renovation so if you haven't done it yet, please take our survey and let us know what you want to see. There's plenty to do, and plenty to read, at any of our six locations and online! Take a look at everything we have to offer, and make sure to check our Hours and Locations page for contact information and current open hours. Thanks for reading!

- Sandy Whitesides, Library Director

Back by popular demand! Enjoy full access to the New York Times, in the library or from home. Whether you’re managing finances, tackling tough parenting problems or simply looking to make sense of this moment, rely on NYT's original, quality journalism to lead the way.

We invite children and their caregivers to join us for our weekly storytime programs! Preschool Storytime meets Tuesday mornings at 10:30 AM and appeals most to children ages 2-5. We check on our puppet friend, Hedgie, read books and sing songs.
The County Library offers a weekly School-Ager Story Time every Wednesday morning at 10:30 AM. School-aged kids, approximately ages 5-10, are invited to join us for longer read-alouds, great nonfiction titles, and even chapter book recommendations! This program will appeal to homeschoolers, preschool storytime graduates, and public school friends on holiday breaks.
Books & Babies meets Thursday mornings at 10:30 AM and is designed to engage infants 24 months and younger with their caregivers. At Books and Babies we read one short book, sing many songs, recite nursery rhymes, and play with puppets. At all our storytimes we make some noise and move around!

All children and their families are welcome at our storytime programs.  Call the library at (540) 984-8200 if you have any questions.

Home of Jacob Haun, Sr., Undated, Photograph 2008, Morrison Studio Collection, Shenandoah County Historical Society/Shenandoah County Library.

Highlights from the Truban Archives

This photograph shows the bungalow home of Jacob Haun Sr., Eleanor Grabill Haun, and family sometime in the 1920s or 1930s. The home still stands on North Main Street in Woodstock across from the Woodstock Shopping Center. This image looks northwest from the sidewalk.

Jacob Haun Sr. (1891-1985) was a veteran of the First World War, founder of the Haun-Magruder Insurance Company in Woodstock, and an official with what became First Virginia Bank. Eleanor Grabill Haun (1888-1976) was a contributing writer for the Shenandoah Herald, a graduate of Massanutten Academy, and the editor of Woodstock’s Bicentennial Historical Booklet. She married Jacob Haun in 1918. They had two children, John Grabill Haun and Jacob Haun Jr.
