"There is more in you than you think" - Kurt Hahn

Dear Parents
I am delighted that the Years 3, 4 and 5 children returned safely from their residential trips this week. They demonstrated courage, teamwork and communication skills, and definitely developed their self-awareness; "I can do this!" shouted Tom.

World Oceans Day was discussed as part of our continuous conversation about environmental issues; the children learnt a lot during the Oceans Quiz.

Mandarin Chinese Club was reinstated after a two year hiatus; my thanks go to Mrs Jiang who taught us to count to 10 in the correct tone.

Nursery

This week in Pre-School, we have been looking at the different forces we feel and use around us. The children had lots of fun trying to pull and push their friends on a sledge, and they also got to make their own kites during our outdoor learning, where again, they used the force of pulling to keep it up in the air.

Reception

The Reception children have been learning about spiders this week as part of their topic work on minibeasts. They threaded some intricate webs ready for their spider creations to sit on. All spider webs are unique, just like us.

In English this week, we completed our reading quiz for Mrs Ilhan. Well done to all the children for showing good perseverance skills. We are now all very excited looking forward to a week of outdoor learning!

Miss Allen and Mrs Walsh

Year 1

This week we have celebrated World Oceans Day at school this week and thought about how we can help to protect our sea and our beaches. In our special assembly quiz, the children helped to run the assembly and asked and answered questions about our oceans.

The children are very much enjoying their visits to the Senior School at lunchtime for their delicious lunches and are getting better every day at organising their food and their cutlery. In class, the children are developing paper engineering skills and have been making sliders and hinges to bring their pictures to life.

Year 2
Back from half term, we are recharged and ready to go. We have been working hard on our assessments but have also had fun learning about Andy Goldsworthy in preparation for our beach art next week- Archie loved this topic and got straight on to making his own art in the playground and at home.

We have continued learning about pollination and Victorian seaside holidays, all of which we can see next week on our trips out.

Mrs Bleasdale
Year 3

Year 3 had an amazing time on their first ever residential. We arrived at Borwick Hall on Wednesday lunchtime and our first activity was the Rocky Ramble. We walked all around Warton Cragg and the children had a wonderful afternoon in the sunshine.

In the evening, we had a campfire and a few songs. We finished our first day with hot chocolate for all and some tasty snacks.

On Wednesday, the children challenged themselves on the bouldering wall and during the pond traverse activity. We had so much fun together and worked as a team to help each other. What a fantastic residential trip and all the Year 3 children were a credit to AKS!

Mrs Blinston

Year 4

Year 4 have had an amazing time on their residential at Borwick Hall this week. They have challenged themselves and shown tenacity and courage during the activities. We have gone on a rocky ramble, caved, climbed and even learnt archery.

Making their own beds, organising their clothes and getting themselves ready has given them more self awareness and a sense of responsibility.

I am very proud of the Year 4s, looking after each other during the day and night showing lots of compassion.

Mrs Briggs
Year 5
Year 5 have had a fabulous few days at Castlehead. We have been able to take part in a wide range of activities including sea traverse, obstacle course, team challenges, low ropes, night line, height ropes, Jacob’s ladder and raft building!

Mrs Whitaker and Mr Worthington
Year 6
Things have been heating up with the upcoming Year 6 production of Macbeth, lots of devilish and spine-tingling acting by the four witches Emma, Camilla, Victoria and Arish - they definitely created quite a stir this week!

The Year 6s have now completed their global History study on the rise and fall of the English Empire; well done Lauren for her brilliant extended written piece on Sam King from The Windrush generation, plus Jessica's detailed account discussing the impact of migration in the 1960's.

Finally, MFL was a frenzy of excitement this week as the children showed their advanced knowledge of numbers in German, battling against each other during a class tournament - super gut gemacht Year 6!

Eco News - World Oceans Day

To celebrate World Oceans Day, we learned about the importance of blue spaces as well as green. In our assembly, the children talked about oxygen, plastic in the ocean and threats to wildlife. We discussed how we might play our part in keeping plastic out of the ocean and our beaches clean. Representatives from every year group helped to ask and answer questions for an Ocean Quiz, well done, everyone!
