Today, communities are striving for enriching and authentic experiences. Across all geographies and demographics, the desire for shared community space and a magnetic center that supports daily life is in full swing.
MKSK has been involved in the evolution of two signature districts -- Easton in Columbus, Ohio and Van Aken in Cleveland, OH. Both projects exemplify an earnest ambition to realize our shared cultural goals of diversity, equity, and inclusion in everyday life by tapping into local culture and expression. This was a goal of the planning and design process of both districts.
With real-world project and program examples focused on aspirational retail entrepreneurship and curated local art, we’ll demonstrate how new mixed-use environments can celebrate authenticity, utilize local fabricators and artists, and foster diverse entrepreneurship to activate place and embed local pride and connection into a community-centered space.

LISL KOTHEIMER, PLA, LEED AP  |  Lisl takes a design-forward approach to projects and puts value in the process of idea generation, critical inquiry, design communication, and telling the story of a place. Lisl has experience with all stages of design from concept through implementation. She is the lead designer on a variety of project types including large-scale urban design and development projects, mixed-use retail environments, and multi-family housing. Lisl has unique design experience with public space activation, temporary placemaking, and integrating public art into projects. Her expertise has helped realize some of the most memorable, community-centered spaces in the cities and towns where we work.

JEFFREY PONGONIS, ASLA, PLA  |  Jeff is committed to the implementation of a meaningful and connected environment. His process is focused and mindful of both the aesthetic details of robust social spaces as well as the greater urban strategy. Jeff’s wide range of projects express his beliefs and commitment to the design of a contextual human environment. His work includes project types ranging from master planning and mixed-use development planning, open space and park design, to academic and campus design.

Waste Collection Made Smarter

We are pleased to announce the launch of our new website dedicated to Victor Stanley Relay Smart Waste Management. With Relay sensor technology and its data driven waste collection, you’re saving much more than waste management costs. Because along with measuring receptacle fill levels for more efficient collection, Relay also collects street-level data that can help cut CO2 emissions, improve public health and bring environmental equity to all parts of the city.
