The Big Story
Join Us in Celebrating the LGBTQ+ Community This Month
|
|
Happy Pride! Here in Kendall Square, we’ve been part of a number of milestones on the road toward LGBTQ+ affirmation, dignity, equality and visibility. In 1969, MIT became one of America’s first higher ed institutions to create an LGBTQ+ student support group. In 1992, the City of Cambridge welcomed America’s first openly gay Black American mayor.
Today, Pride Month serves as a celebration and a reminder that there’s still so much we can do to expand on Kendall’s spirit for diversity and inclusion. Here are some ideas for celebrating Pride in Kendall:
1. OUTbio, biotech’s largest LGBTQ+ professionals group, is hosting a public outdoor event at MIT University Park this Thursday, June 16, from 5 - 8:00 pm.
Attendees will enjoy catering by Blueprint Medicines, as well as an interactive presentation on transgender health issues by a special speaker from Fenway Health. Register today to make new LGBTQ+ connections!
"After two years without OUTbio's signature biotech Pride events, we've had non-stop inquiries in recent months about what to expect," says Ramsey Johnson, OUTbio's founder and president. "This year's gathering, in partnership with Blueprint Medicines, promises to be a fantastic event and the premier biotech event for Pride. Whether you want to reconnect with the community in-person, make new contacts, engage with the expert presenter, or just let your hair down among friends and colleagues, this is going to be the evening for you."
2. Local brewery Lamplighter will be hosting a Pride Trivia this Thursday, June 16, from 7:30 - 9:30 pm.
Don’t miss out on the chance to win a four pack of Lamplighter’s special Pride Month beer, as well as tickets to their long-awaited Taproom Drag Race! Assemble your team and make sure to register ahead of time (one ticket = one team of two to six players).
3. Consider setting some time aside to learn about Cambridge’s LGBTQ+ history.
A good place to start: The History Project, a Boston-based non-profit committed to documenting and preserving primary accounts of local LGBTQ+ activists. Founded in 1980, the History Project now maintains one of the largest LGBTQ+ archives in the country—with more than 150 collections encompassing over 1 million artifacts and documents in total. Learn more about their ongoing projects and exhibitions here!

Sanofi Begins Move into Cambridge Crossing
On Tuesday, June 7, Sanofi officially opened its Cambridge Crossing campus in a ribbon-cutting ceremony with MA Governor Charlie Baker and Cambridge Mayor Sumbul Siddiqui. The facilities at 450 and 350 Water Street will offer space for 2,500 Sanofi employees.
"Cambridge has been our home for many years," said Bill Sibold, Sanofi's Executive Vice President and Global Head of Specialty Care, at the event. "Opening our new facility in Cambridge Crossing is allowing us to bring together our employees across Massachusetts under one roof, which is an important step in facilitating the kind of collaboration needed to fulfill our purpose of chasing the miracles of science to improve people's lives."
