D-Lab is currently closed to the public (virtual space, front desk, workshops, new consulting requests, and consulting drop-ins).

We plan to re-open our doors and begin providing services when fall semester begins in August 2022. Our re-opening date is still to be determined, but we will let you all know our plan as we get closer to early August. Our newsletter updates over the summer will change from our regular weekly updates instead to occasional updates as we have information to share.

Open Senior Data Systems Analyst Position at the D-Lab! 


The D-Lab is hiring! We are looking for someone to direct custom training, facilitate research programs and related services, and serve as a senior instructor or consultant in custom training and research programs at the D-Lab. This position will be responsible for leading and conducting computational data analysis efforts for D-Lab special projects using internal and external data sources and advanced statistical methods and data analysis and visualization techniques. This is a one year, 100% full-time, 40-hours per week, eligible for full UC benefits, contract appointment (with the possibility of extension).

Article: Predicting Cybersecurity Incidents With Machine Learning and Mandatory Disclosure Regulation

Cybersecurity risk is an increasingly common concern for organizations that collect and maintain vast troves of data. In 2011, the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) provided guidelines for how publicly traded companies should convey these risks to potential investors. But does this mandatory disclosure regime effectively serve this purpose in the cybersecurity context? This Article uses machine learning and natural language processing techniques to analyze firms’ mandatory risk disclosure statements, predict which firms are at the greatest risk of suffering cybersecurity incidents, and evaluate how well disclosure meets the goals of the broad regulatory regime. The main focus of the role is on short consultations for statistical and/or programming issues that researchers face, but there are also opportunities to be involved with longer term projects. Our clientele is very diverse - we service almost all departments and centers at both Harvard and MIT - so we’re looking for someone with great breadth, as well as depth of knowledge. The basic core skills we’re looking for are a very solid background in frequentist-based inference using generalized linear models, as well as fluency in at least one statistical software (preferably R, Python, or Stata).
