Dear Holy Cross Families,

Even though we are now one of the last schools to still be in session during this second week of June, it doesn’t keep us from learning during this final stretch!  A few days ago, I gave a tour of our school and near the end of the tour, one of the visitors said, “I’m impressed that, even during these last days of school, every single classroom we went into was full of students who were active and busy learning!”  From end-of-year cursive lessons in second grade to interactive protractor practice in Junior High Math, our students continue to fill their last few days with plenty of learning.  It’s a great testament to the dedication of our teachers and our overall commitment to the school’s pillar of knowledge.

In an effort to have our school calendar align better with other area schools, we will start the 2022-2023 school year on August 18th and our last day will be June 2nd.  These dates were shared with Holy Cross families a few months ago.  However, after first publishing the tentative calendar for next school year, the state of Indiana shared new guidelines for eLearning and we have found it necessary to make a few changes to our originally published calendar.  Schools are now limited to three asynchronous eLearning days per school year and so we have changed the way our teachers will receive regular professional development opportunities.  You will notice that our revised version of the 2022-2023 academic calendar has Early Dismissal days built in.  Students will be dismissed at 2:00 p.m. on these days and teachers will participate in professional development from 2:20 - 4:00 p.m.   We will save our three eLearning days for inclement weather.  Students will be expected to do eLearning on the first three snow days of the school year.  Any additional snow days would become traditional snow days with no online learning expectations.  Instead, we would make them up by using the built in “snow make-up days” on the school calendar.

For now, though, let’s enjoy the summer weather and not worry about snow days!  During these summer months, please make sure to keep your child’s brain and body active!  Many of our older students will have required summer Reading and Math assignments so that they do not lose the academic gains they have made throughout the school year and I encourage parents of all grade levels to set aside time for regular opportunities for reading, math, and writing practice.  Please reach out to your child’s teacher if you would like practical suggestions for how to make this happen with your child.

Have a great week!

Queridas familias,

Last Sunday’s Solemnity of Pentecost celebrates not only the Holy Spirit’s presence in the lives of the early disciples but also the gifts that the Holy Spirit imparts to them. We think of the traditional seven gifts of the Holy Spirit: Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety, and Fear of the Lord. These are gifts that all of us receive in the sacrament of Confirmation. Saint Paul reminds us that each of us receives gifts from the Holy Spirit different from what others receive, just as the “gift” that each part of the body brings to the whole is different from what other parts of the body bring. As members of the Church, the Body of Christ, each of us has a unique set of gifts, talents and abilities that we are called to place at the service of the Church for the spreading of the
Gospel of Jesus Christ.

What are the gifts, the talents, that you are able to offer Holy Cross Parish for the building up of our parish community, so that we are able to fulfill our purpose as a parish? Every one of us has something to offer the parish, including our sick and homebound who can offer a ministry of prayer on behalf of the parish. The rest of us are able to offer whatever particular gifts we have so that the parish can grow, strengthen and flourish in knowing, loving and serving God and neighbor, to which our parish mission statement calls us...

Pulled Pork for Parking Lot Potholes!
All parishioners are invited and encouraged to attend a fundraiser dinner on Saturday, June 11th, beginning at 5:00 pm (after the 4 pm Mass), sponsored by our Knights of Columbus, to raise funds toward repair, resurfacing and relining our parking lots.  With the $10,000 grant from the diocesan Parish in Need Fund, we need to raise an additional $24,000 for this project through various fundraising efforts.
The cost of the dinner is $5 per person and $20 per immediate family.  The menu includes pulled pork sandwiches, baked beans and potato salad, with a Mac n’ Cheese option for the children.Weather permitting, tables will be set up for the dinner on the parking lot behind the church, which seems appropriate for this fundraiser!  If too hot or rainy, it will be held in the gym.  We will have food for 300 people, so please plan on attending. Can't attend? Donations are welcome!
