St. Barnabas Day BBQ
We will have our traditional St. Barnabas Day BBQ on June 12th immediately following the 10:00 service. We will be eating on site this year with table set up both inside and out.

We will provide BBQ chicken or vegetarian burger along with beans, bread and beverages.

We ask you to bring a salad or dessert to share. If you aren’t able to provide a dish, don’t worry we always have plenty of food.

In order to prepare for the right amount of food, there is a signup sheet in the narthex or we ask that you call or email the parish office and let us know how many people will be attending.

We hope to see all of you on June 12th. Everyone is welcome and remember, wear red.

Updates From the Vestry

In its last meeting, our Vestry decided several things that we want to bring to your attention.

Investment Committee Proposal Approved – The Vestry has approved a proposal from the Investment to move money out of our account at Chase Bank and into the Episcopal Church Foundation and into a new investment account with Vanguard. Some money will be moved immediately, and other money will moved each month over the next thirteen month. If you would like to have a copy of the detailed plan, then send an email to saintbarnabasag@gmail.com, and a copy will be emailed to you.

Building a Pergola – Over two years ago, money was donated to build a pergola on the playground side of our Parish Hall. Plans are moving forward. At this time a design consultant is working with the City to get a minor use permit so that construction may commence.

Work Day – Thank you to all who participated in our recent Work Day. The carpets in our worship space were cleaned, the Memorial Garden and parking area were weeded and cleaned up, maintenance was done on the playground equipment.

Volunteers operate the St. Barnabas Thrift Shop.
“People willing to roll up their sleeves seldom lose their shirts.”

Book sales have moved from the patio to the parish hall. Thank you to those who have purchased books. Summer is an especially active season for donations. To avoid disappointment, if you have more than a couple of grocery bags of things please call first to make sure we have room to accept them. The phone number is 805-270-4023.

Help wanted: someone to transport books from the shop to the parish hall and arrange/display. Remove books from the parish hall and transport hardbacks to the Grover Beach library and paperbacks to Nan’s Preowned Books. This should require a few hours two or three times a month.

Due to a small bathroom sink, some glass or ceramic items need to be rinsed so the shop is seeking someone willing to pick up items, rinse and return to the shop. One trip a week would help the process.

Please call Mary Ann Hjalmarson (805)709-4284 if any of these jobs interest you.

Processors and cashiers are always needed.
Everyone appreciates the generosity of the congregation.

Our hearts are with all those living through the crisis in Ukraine. Episcopal Relief & Development is mobilizing with our partners to provide humanitarian assistance to families fleeing the violence — and we will continue to coordinate with these networks to meet the needs of families that have been displaced. Please support these efforts, and please pray for all those who are affected.

Go to www.episcopalrelief.org  to donate quickly to refugees fleeing Ukraine.  On the homepage there is a button that allows you an easy way to give money; our prayers are in pushing “donate.”

We are grateful for your support of the many for whom prayers are answered with a cup of soup, a warm coat, and a sleeping bag.

One-Woman-Show with Brynn Albanese
Sunday, July 3rd at 3pm

Brynn is a well-known and loved multi genre violinist on the California Central Coast. She has been seen front and center as Soloist and Concertmaster on numerous Performing Arts Center stages with a wide variety of groups in the area as well as the ever-popular World Music Band, Café Musique. She is the Founder and Artistic Director of Cambria’s largest Concert Series, Cambria Concerts Unplugged. Brynn is now a Therapeutic Music Practitioner and End of Life Doula in Hospitals and Skilled Nursing Facilities. During the Pandemic, Brynn created a One-Woman-Show using backing tracks and recordings of her own band in the living room of her Cambria home. Seeing that people were starving for LIVE music, in person, she took to the streets, cul-de-sacs, medians, yards, balconies and driveways and has performed over 140 Concerts since April 2020. A mix of European Gypsy, Latin jazz, Classical with a twist, Opera covers and a big splash of Celtic… she has created a lively, engaging and interactive show that she has now taken on the road!

Countywide Refugee Resettlement Project

Our second Afghan family, relatives of our first family, is arriving next week. It looks like the U.S. State Department is paying for the second family to stay in a hotel for up to 2 weeks. And we think we have a line on an apartment that is available right away. That gives us time to help move all kinds of furniture and other collected donated goods into the apartment and help get it set up really nice for them. But this takes a LOT of effort. We have an amazing team, headed by Cathy Francis, working on collecting in-kind donations but to get the apartment set up is going to require a lot of folks pitching in and helping. Please consider contacting Cathy and letting her know you would like to help.

Here is what we need:
  1. We need people who can assemble bedframes, who are handy and can go to the hardware store to buy the right bolts (donations often come with missing pieces) to put things together. We need these handy people to anchor tall heavy furniture to the wall with earthquake straps. And we need people who can use a professional steamer (we have one we can use) to sanitize all of the mattresses.

  2. We need people to clean furniture, plus every dish and every single item that we use to furnish the apartment. Lots of our donations are dusty and have been stored by donors for years. These donations are going to need a good thorough cleaning. This includes sofas and chairs as well as wood furniture, dishes, and all household items.  We also need our cleaning people to check to see that the apartment has been cleaned to our standard by property management and to address issues when things aren’t quite right.

  3. We need volunteer to help set up the apartment, to place items where they go in cabinets and closets. We need people to iron bedskirts and comforters so that they look attractive. We need people to help with finishing touches.
So we need 3 types of help, and we need multiple people of each type – handymen/handywomen, cleaning people, and set up people.  We’ll put together a schedule with two 4 hour shifts per day as soon as we know our timing a little better. We currently DO NOT HAVE the peoplepower we need to pull this off, so please volunteer!  Cathy Francis  805-801-0895  cathy@cathyfrancis.com
