Triathlon X race report

A few club members attempted the infamous Triathlon X (https://triathlonx.co.uk/index.php/full-x) on Saturday 4th June. Billed as the toughest iron-distance race in the World according to Tri220 magazine.

A relatively straight forward swim in Windermere leads onto the original Fred Whitton bike route, climbs include, The Struggle, Park brow, Honister, Newlands, Whinlatter, Cold fell, Hardknot, Wrynose and Hawkshead Hill.
Completion of that leads on to the trail marathon following the Cumbrian way from Ambleside through the Langdale Valley to Mickleden, here it ramps up vertically up through Rossett Ghyll to Esk Hause along Great End and Broad Crag before summitting at Scafell pike, only to return all the way back down to Ambleside.

Four keen Chester Tri racers, Chris Smith, Dave Brown, Jay Haddley and Shaun Jackson, stood on the start line at 04.30 (yes, really 04.30) waiting for the klaxon to go.

Shaun and Jay came out the water towards the top of the field followed by Chris. Dave, hampered by cramp due to the cold water made it out in one piece a few minutes later.

The sun was beginning to come out and warm the cold limbs just in time for the first climb, The Struggle. The bike course was a somewhat lonely affair with only 100ish riders taking on the 112 mile single loop ride counting down the climbs and the miles.

Dave progressed up the field after his swim and came into transition towards the top of the race. Chris plugged away at the ride and kept it steady saving some for the run. Jay had the unfortunate luck of suffering six punctures in the race, setting him back over 2 hours dropping him from 3rd place down towards the back of the field.

Shaun meanwhile, had decided the bike was enough and decided not to lace up his trainers for the run.

Onto the run, the sun was cracking the flags and beating down on the weary triathletes, caps and suncream were a necessity, many racers making use of the stream coming down from Rossett Ghyll to top up water bottles to keep them going.

Once hitting the summit it turned into a mental battle to keep pushing home against the setting sun.

Dave Brown finished in 6th place with a time of 15hr42, Jay Haddley ran strong to overtake 30 people came 19th in a time of 17hr02 and Chris Smith in 27th, time of 17hr36.

Club Sportive save the date – Sunday 26th June

We will be following the Rise Above sportive routes with three distances available (80,120 &160km). All of the routes have a good bit of climbing in them so whichever one you choose will be a tough challenge and you'll definitely have earned some cake afterwards.

It would be great to see as many of you as possible on the ride and make it a great day out. We’ll be finalising the details over the next few weeks but please keep the date free if you’re interested in the event. We will also need some navigators for the rides, if you are interested in assisting with this, we would really appreciate it. Please let us know below or email bike@chestertri.org.uk if you are available to help.
