June 2022 Newsletter

FROM THE COCKPIT

With Memorial Day just behind us and June just beginning, I wanted to thank our partners for 5 great months of support. As the summer months begin, so does our support for the local military. This month will see the USO Northwest at a number of large events, including the Portland Rose Festival, Sentry Eagle in Klamath Falls, OR, and three Special Delivery Programs at Mountain Home Air Force Base (AFB) in Idaho, Fairchild AFB in Spokane and Joint Base Lewis McChord in Tacoma.

The USO’s Special Delivery Program is a baby shower event for military parents-to-be and features Heidi Murkoff, the best-selling author of the “What to Expect” book series. I have been able to attend a number of these baby showers over the last 10 years and each is a special event for our expecting Mothers and Fathers.

Also, just weeks away will be our first major fundraising event – our Red, White, and Blue Golf Classic at the Golf Club at Newcastle. We have over 40 sponsoring partners so far and growing toward 60. If you know of a patriotic company that would like to show their support to our service Men and Women as well as their family members, pls have them click the link below to learn more about this incredible event.  https://usogolf.maxgiving.golf/tickets

See the photo below for more information about this amazing tournament.

Finally, for those of you wondering how you could spend some of your free time, maybe consider volunteering at a local USO Center such as our Sea-Tac Airport USO Center.  There are many rewards to supporting the thousands of military traveling each month through Sea-Tac. For those interested, please contact Matt Sult at msult@uso.org. A simple visit to Sea-Tac to see what our volunteers do is heartwarming and Matt will even cover your airport parking!

Thank you all for your gifts of time, talent, and treasure. We need each of you to keep our doors open, the hotdog rollers rolling, and to ensure our military is taken care of!!

Cheers,

Your Executive Director
Don Leingang

SEATAC CENTER
Our Sea-Tac Center has seen several full lounge rooms with recent Flight Nights stopping through before departing on overseas flights.

CAMP LEWIS - JBLM
Chef Jennie served lunch today to a full house of hungry soldiers and families at the USO Camp Lewis Center. Over the last few months, guests visiting Camp Lewis Center for the computers and lunch has increased by over 250%.

FAIRCHILD AFB
USO Northwest volunteers were at work serving Fairchild AFB Airmen and their families during the base's Sky Fest Airshow featuring the Thunderbirds Air Demonstration Squadron. Lots of family-friendly activities were offered over the action-packed weekend.

MOBILE EVENTS
USO Northwest recently treated the children of McChord Field's Carter Lake Elementary School to ice cream treats. This special event was designed to show our dedication to and appreciation of military children.

USO Northwest once again supported JBLM's 2nd Ranger Battalion "Banner Day" serving lunch to hundreds of Soldiers taking part in the event. USO Northwest volunteers and the Ranger Battalion have enjoyed a special relationship over the years which was very evident at this year's Banner Day.

USO TRANSITIONS

The USO Pathfinder Transitions Program supports military spouses and service members at every stage of their military career. From taking your oath, to well into your journey to civilian life. Let’s face it; military families are constantly in transition. Moving, being between PCS’s, leaving friends and family, prepping to move, deployments, training, remote tours, TDY’s, new additions to the family, graduates heading to college, and everything in between! Having support is a beautiful thing. That’s what the USO is all about!

USO Transitions provides professional development services. Your USO Transition Specialist connects you to the resources you need, no matter where you call home. Core areas of support: employment, education, financial readiness, VA benefits, and mentoring. USO Transitions is a focused, tailored experience. Our objective is to provide you with a detailed action plan for the resources you need to obtain your personal and professional goals. Everything we do is free of charge!

Our program is a fantastic fit for spouses who focus on their families and those transitioning out of the military, preparing to pivot and join the civilian workforce. The USO Transitions Program is not just for active duty Service Members. In fact, one in five JBLM Action Plans created were actually to assist a military spouse. Schedule time on your calendar to dedicate to your future success and register at www.uso.org/transition.
