A Social History of the Camera
High school students in Mr. Collins' Human Geography class have spent the past month studying about how photos and videos have changed how we see the world. "The invention of the camera was a very interesting time in history," explained Mr. Collins. "Artists of the 19th century responded to the realism of a photograph by making new experimental styles of art."
In response to their studies of this revolution in documenting the world, students created handmade pinhole cameras. These cameras were one of the first kinds of photography devices that did not have a lens. Rather, they captured an image by passing light through a small hole. Students modernized this old invention by using their smartphones to capture photos from their pinhole cameras.
Making Pinhole Cameras
By Patritsia M, 10th grade
The experience with making a pinhole camera and learning about the history of photography and the camera was an interesting topic. We got to see how the camera evolved through the centuries. The creation of the pinhole camera in class was a very hands-on job, and it was very nice to actually know that you can make a camera from scratch by using simple materials such as cardboard boxes, black paper, magnifying glass, tape and greaseproof paper.
Getting the camera to work wasn’t as simple as I thought, because you had to actually make two boxes and measure the sizes for them to fit into each other. The box inside is used as a tool to help you focus the picture better. Once we got the final result of the pinhole camera, I was impressed that it actually worked and we got the chance to take many “old looking” photos with our cameras.

Our Future Careers

Elementary students finished their Unit of Inquiry 'How We Organize Ourselves' with a showcase presentation for the community. Parents were invited to see their children share their projects and celebrate the end of the unit together.

Students in Upper Elementary identified a need in the community for a product and made business plans for starting a company.  They pitched their ideas looking for investments. "The

parents went wild for the investing aspect of the project," Ms. Hopkins explained.

Students in Lower Elementary thought about their future careers and researched the skills they would need for that job. Students chose interesting fields like zoology, biology, pharmacology, and professional tennis to investigate. Overall, it was a wonderful day for students to share their learning.

Sharing the Planet
An Elementary Update by Salomé Ardila Plata

In unit #6 we have been studying how we share the planet.

Lower Elementary students have been learning about the life below water, how humans harm the ocean, and how we can protect the ocean and the animals.

Upper Elementary students have been working on the UN Sustainable Development Goals and writing an opinion article.

In inquiry we use our skills (communication, social, and research) to explore rights of the children and how they relate to the animals.

Additionally, Upper Elementary students have been learning about 3D shapes in math class by building, drawing and measuring them. It has been an exciting month in Elementary!

Keeping the Spirit Alive!

Friday, May 27th was one of the most anticipated days of the whole school year. It was the culmination of all the effort the Spirit Teams made throughout the year and the day we learned who the Spirit champions were. It was Spirit Day!

The morning started off with a quiz show called Mental Mania guided by the Spirit Masters - Ms. Morrison and Mr. Rios. It was a close game, but in the end, the Orange Wildcats took home the victory points for their team.

By mid-day, Sergi and the staff from La Masia prepared a nice BBQ lunch for everyone to enjoy outside. The weather was perfect and everyone really enjoyed having a nice meal together. It is not usual for the whole school to eat together, so it was quite a treat.

After, the sports portion of the day began. Teams participated in volleyball, around-the-world tennis, football, and 'el pañuelo' where you must grab a handkerchief and run. We were very impressed by the great sportsmanship and team collaboration we saw during the games!

By 16:00, the games were over and the Spirit Masters were tallying the points for each team.  The points from Mental Mania and the sports events were added to the each team's year-to-date total to find out who the winners were. Moving up from 3rd place at the beginning of the day to the position of Spirit Team Champions for the 2021-2022 school year was the Yellow Cheetahs!

Thank you to all the Spirit Teams for your hard work in class and dedication to upholding our school values throughout the year! We look forward to doing it all over again next year!
