Rob Schouten Gallery
Rob Schouten Gallery & Sculpture Garden presents:
Rare Birds & Other Friends
mixed media paintings by Francy Blumhagen
June 1st - 27th

Opening Reception
Saturday, June 4th from 5 to 7 pm
During Langley’s First Saturday Art Walk

View the Exhibition:
https://www.robschoutengallery.com/francy-blumhagen

Francy Blumhagen has been making mixed media paintings, handmade prints, and collages for about 40 years and has shown her work throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Working with handmade papers and acrylic paints, Blumhagen creates layered textured images of birds and wildlife in the Salish Sea region. Each piece is a thoughtful meditation on the animals that surround us, expressed in bold colorful imagery that give us a deeper appreciation of our environment.

She explains: “My inspirations for my work come from the sights and sounds that surround me everyday as I walk my dogs in the hills and forests and beaches of Whidbey Island.“

Her mixed media includes many kinds of pencils, crayons, acrylic paint, metallic powders, ink, and some wax. The collaging is done with paper she has painted on or marked in a variety of ways, and then cut to fit the imagery. They reflect ideas about what she sees — not literal, but nor are they completely abstract.

Francy received her B.F.A. in painting from the University of Washington in 1982 and studied extensively with Jacob Lawrence, Michael Spafford and Norman Lundin. She works in a variety of media, including block printing, woodcut, collage, and wax resist.

Please join us for our Opening Reception on Saturday, June 4th from 5 to 7 p.m. in conjunction with Langley’s First Saturday Art Walk.

We’d love to see you!

Rob Schouten Gallery, a premier showcase for Whidbey Island and Northwest artists, is located at 101 Anthes Avenue, Langley WA at the corner of First and Anthes. The gallery is open Weekends 10 - 5, Weekdays 11 - 4, Tuesdays by appointment.

Garry Oak Gallery
Take a look at Garry Oak Gallery's artist Peggy Shashy

Dr. Shashy's Bio:
Although Dr. Peggy Shashy did not originally set out to create art, she naturally found her way to artistic expression through her appreciation for the beauty of nature.  A veterinarian for more than 29 years, Dr. Shashy is fond of all animals, especially birds. While working as a veterinarian, she volunteered as a wildlife rehabilitator for BEAKS, a nonprofit organization dedicated to caring for injured wild birds. During this time, she became an avid birdwatcher and began creating mosaics and other artwork with avian themes.

Once Dr. Shashy took a fused glass course at a local studio, her passion for creating art was ignited. She fell in love with the glass movement and met one of the founders, Richard La Londe, on Whidbey Island.  Dr. Shashy took several of La Londe’s classes and learned how to utilize the liquid line technique. During a class with another artist named Robert Leatherbarrow, she learned the crackle glass technique that he developed. Always eager to learn and expand her repertoire, Dr. Shashy enjoys the endless possibilities of working with glass.

Her artwork was recognized in La Londe’s second book, “Richard La Londe and Friends:
Fused Glass • Vitreous Enamels and Other Techniques,” and on the cover of the Association of Avian Veterinarians Journal. A seahorse tile she created is displayed as part of a glass quilt on exhibit at Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital in Spokane, Washington.
Nature is a consistent theme in her work, and Dr. Shashy plans to continue refining her techniques. She is eager to learn more about pate de verre in kiln casting.
Dr. Shashy values glass powders for their unique ability to let an artist show a variety of designs and techniques. As she continues to grow as an artist, Dr. Shashy hopes to share her love of art by promoting more art in education to allow children to express themselves with this special art form.

It is still chilly, but trees and shrubs are blooming. It is beautiful and peaceful here.
We still have space in Oliver Sin’s workshop in May, Todd Casey and Sarah Sedwick jointly teaching in June and last but not least: Jeff Hein also in June. Late July we have a watercolor plein air workshop with Carolyn Lord and at that time of the summer the weather is great.

Finally, we have a special intensive workshop with Dominique Medici in July which is limited to 6 students to ensure maximum teacher/student interaction.  This workshop will be at our studio and house and will include a gourmet lunch! This is FULL with waitlist.

We might add more workshops of this format later.

Penn Cove Gallery
Penn Cove Gallery's Featured Artist:
Marcy Johnson

As a full-time artist, Marcy is in her Northwest studio daily. She has always been inspired by the visual simplicity of ethnic art. After her years at university, she explored a full-time fiber arts career. Over the years and after extensive travel, she has expanded her interests, media, and techniques.

Marcy weaves rayon bouclé and rayon chenille scarves and alpaca scarves and shawls. She chooses colors that complement the fashion colors of the Northwest. For her jewelry line she hand cuts each metal element and then hammers them to create texture. The patina and embellishment of the pieces make them unique.
Marcy has always found great energy from connecting with, and exploring different cultures. She is excited about sharing these inspirational experiences through teaching and creating individual works of art. She says, “I feel I have come full circle and enjoy the seemingly endless stimulation I have developed for myself.”

Whidbey Art Gallery
Whidbey Art Gallery June 2022

It’s our 30th anniversary! The gallery has been in business in Langley for 30 years, representing endless talent and so many friends have passed through the doors to enjoy the art and artists.

Please invite everyone you know to come celebrate with us at the Art Walk on Saturday June 4 from 5-7. Many current and past artists will be there, and we will have refreshments, giveaways, and live music! The first 30 people to arrive will receive a Whidbey Art Gallery tote bag.

Artist Codie Carman and her band ‘Into the West’ will perform. Into the West delivers a strong country, rock, and blues beat featuring familiar covers and original tunes. The band consists of Debbie Cantwell on keyboard, viola, mandolin, and vocals; Richard Knight on drums; Ed Wertz on bass; Stephen Reitz on lead guitar and vocals; and Codie Carman on rhythm guitar and lead vocalist.

Our featured artist for June is Doug Hansen. Doug’s years of art studies combined with his artisan skills have given rise to an inventive style he calls "Natstracts" (abstracts of nature). He integrates oils and organic elements into unexpected three-dimensional studies. “Every day the world seems to move faster and get crazier, and there's an increasing pressure just to cope. All that, at the expense of merely appreciating life.” His popular work is oil on board/mixed media.

Come see it anytime in June as we’re open daily from 10-5.

Art for Ukraine:
You may see artists’ work with a small card next to it with a Ukrainian flag symbol. The card indicates that the artist will donate profits from the sale of the piece to a Ukraine humanitarian support organization such as World Central Kitchen or UNICEF/Ukraine. There are also solidarity doves available in exchange for a donation to a charity of your choice. So far several hundred dollars have been donated.

Whidbey Art Gallery is also a location for one of the Chair-ity Chair Trail chairs for WIN. This one was painted by gallery artist, Margaret Tollefson, featuring a Langley bunny.
