A win at NRC's Environment Award 2022!

We had a big night out in Dargaville last week - as a group, we won the Environmental action in pest management section of the Northland Regional Council’s Environmental Awards!

For all you folks on the peninsula doing pest control on your property (and for some, your neighbours) our folk who are trapping public areas, Zane, our professional trapper and supporters take a bow 🙂

A huge thank you also to Northland Regional Council for the supply of trapping hardware over the past five years. And to Andy Mentor and team from Kiwi Coast for all your amazing support and advice.
One kiwi saved on Opito Bay Rd

Young Arlo (Batman T) and his Dad rescued this juvenile female kiwi off the road near Opito Bay recently, she'd injured her leg.

Arlo’s mum Claudia got her to Kerikeri Highway Vets. DoC then got her to the Recovery Centre in Whangarei.

After some rehab, she was released into Rangitane Reserve.  Kiwi handler Lesley Baigent and Andy Mentor from Kiwi Coast made her a cozy burrow for her first night back in the bush and let her go 🙂.  Yay, well done everyone!
V2 website launched...

We've done a fair bit of work to our site, it's looking pretty spiffy now...

It's even got a feed of our Facebook posts in the News section for those of you not on Crackbook :) Lot's of cool videos in there.

Akeake Reserve water stations a hit with the birds

The eight new water stations in Akeake are doing the business.

This ruru made it a habit to have a drink and a bit of a bath before he started work for the night!

The station where we had the camera had birds in attendance 30% of daylight hours. Chewed through our trailcam cards in no time :)

A huge thank you to everyone who donated via the link on the last newsletter - so wonderful!

A donation would be hugely helpful to ensuring that our work can continue.

How your donation will help

  • Pay our professional trapper to maintain the stoat trap network, a key component in protecting kiwi and other native birds
  • Purchase baits, lures and traps for our network
  • Obtain native trees to plant in community areas and to manage weeds
  • Maintain our signage, education activities and website

We are now a registered charity CC59325. Donations over $5 are tax deductible.

Our time spent in running the Trust is entirely voluntary.

A reminder about leptospirosis

Watched Kiwi Coast's excellent online Pest Control  "Zui" on the weekend via Zoom.

They had a good reminder about the dangers of leptospirosis when we're handling rats, mice, possums, hedgehogs and pigs.

It's planting time, feed the birds - plant food natives

NRC put a fantastic downloadable booklet on native trees and plants.
  • What native trees are the best food for kereru / tui / silvereye
  • Which trees possum most like to eat!
  • Growth rates / final heights / what conditions each species prefers
The cheat sheet is:
Best food for kereru: taraire, karaka, nikau and puriri.
Best food for tui/silvereye: flax, kowhai, kahikatea, kohekohe, puriri, pohutukakwa and rewarewa

Download the booklet here
Apart from trapping, what else can we do?

We've made a list! You'll need a cup of tea and a lie down after reading through this lot :)

Food trees to plant, weeds to bust, ideas for making your property invertebrate friendly. Get involved in annual kiwi call counts, five minute bird counts, job share a trap line, collect native tree seed for restoring the reserves...
