WET WINTER SOWING OPTIONS

By Mixed Farm Adviser, Rohan Leach
While some producers may have been lucky and received ideal rainfall in April and May to help along grazing crops and canola, many will be looking at re-sowing large areas. This is due to crops struggling with emergence issues or have been submerged with seedlings drowned. Conditions may still be too wet for some farmers, raising concerns of sowing crops outside their sowing windows.
I wrote an article last year on Management options for unsown paddocks  in August of 2021 and here we are again in June, with a similar situation facing growers after an incredibly wet Autumn. As I said in the previous article, while the wet conditions are not ideal, it beats the alternative!

RESERVES FENCED TO REDUCE DUMPING

Three Travelling Stock Reserves (TSRs) have been fenced to protect the areas from illegal activities.
The Gum Bend Reserve on the Lachlan River at Condobolin and Talbragar and Mugga Hill Reserves near Dubbo were fenced to allow pedestrian traffic, passive recreation and reduce rubbish dumping, four-wheel driving and motorbike riding.

TSR team member Jason Gavenlock said it was an unfortunate but necessary move to try and preserve the values of the reserves after the team had to remove two-tonnes of rubbish including tyres, household waste and syringes

EXOTIC DISEASES: WHAT TO LOOK FOR

By Coonamble District Vet, Dr Jillian Kelly
With two very significant exotic animal diseases recently found in Indonesia, it’s a timely reminder that producers within Australia need to be keeping a close eye on their stock for any unusual clinical signs.

Lumpy Skin Disease is a viral skin disease that is spread primarily by biting insects such as certain species of flies and mosquitoes. It affects cattle and infection typically causes an acute disease with fever, depression, and characteristic skin nodules (lumps, ulcers and scabs).  It is possible that insect vectors carrying this disease could blow into Australia from the north from Indonesia, and so vigilance and early detection is really important.

Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) is a highly contagious virus that affects cloven-hoofed animals including cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and alpacas. Clinical signs of FMD include fever, excessive salivation, loss of appetite, sores in the mouth, nose, udder, between the toes and coronary band which leads to severe lameness, decrease in milk production and dramatic loss in condition.

SUPPLEMENTS CRITICAL: LAMBING EWES

By Condobolin District Vet, Dr Kirsty Cordon
We have seen several autumn lambing ewe mobs either at the point of lambing or late gestation in negative energy balance despite an abundance of what ‘looks like’ more than enough green feed.
Supplementary feeding is critical to fill this seasonal energy deficit to keep ewes in positive energy status throughout late pregnancy and into lactation, with aims of maintaining adequate body condition for next season, producing better quality colostrum, reducing the risk of pregnancy toxaemia, and promoting more live lambs on the ground and therefore influencing overall profitability.

THEY'RE COUNTING ON YOU: ANNUAL LAND AND STOCK RETURNS

Your Annual Land and Stock Return (ALSR) will soon arrive in your letterbox, we need you to complete it by 31 August 2022.

Annual returns are essentially a ‘farm census’ of the livestock on your property on 30 June each year. It provides us with important information on land use and livestock numbers across the state.

With biosecurity threats like Foot and Mouth disease on Australia’s doorstep, we need to work together to safeguard NSW and keep our markets open for producers. Completing your ALSR means when disease strikes or emergencies occur, we understand how many animals in your area need our help, such as providing a safe place to go, or emergency fodder and water supplies.

Many landholders don’t have any livestock and utilise their property for horticulture and cropping or enjoy their property for its biodiversity and lifestyle value. We still need you to complete your ALSR to ensure you do not occur additional livestock charges on your rates and to make certain our records are up to date in case of emergencies.

The secure online portal will open on 30 June, so you can lodge online

You must complete your ALSR by 31 August 2022, to avoid additional charges being applied to your rates next year.
