The season for Salvias
Salvias are a wonderful group of plants, giving loads of flowers to delight the eye and entice the bees and butterflies. As we move towards summer, the number of different types and varieties on offer at Riverside is going up and up! Here are just a few to whet your appetite…
Salvia ‘Hot Lips’: This is one of the most popular Salvias we sell, adored for its bright red and white flowers all through the summer. The foliage gives off a blackcurrant aroma.
Salvia nemerosa: Varieties bred from this species include the beautiful ‘Caradonna’ and the ‘Sensation’ series. These have a profusion of upright flower spikes in late spring and summer, and with deadheading may continue flowering into autumn.
Salvia 'Amistad': Another Riverside customer favourite, this variety is noted for its long flowering season and deep purple flowers which adorn its dark stems.
Salvia guaranitica ‘Black and Bloom’: A tall, dramatic plant perfect for the back of a border, it has intense blue flowers that contrast against its black stems and deep green leaves.
And we also of course have Common Sage (Salvia officinalis) in our herb section. You may know it best for its culinary uses but when it flowers its relationship to its cousins above becomes apparent!
