Place in a Scotland island setting

Our 'Place in a Scottish island setting – online workshop' held towards the end of May in partnership with Inspiring Scotland attracted over 130 people to hear from a stellar line-up of speakers and presenters, including:
  • Jenny Rambridge from Hope Cohousing
  • Chris MacLullich from Tagsa Uibhist (Uist Support)
  • Phyl Meyer from Tiree Community Development Trust
  • Coinneach Morrison from The Scottish Government
  • Diarmaid Lawlor from the Scottish Futures Trust
  • Lucy Conway from Inspiring Scotland
The workshop focused on how place-based decision making offers a more joined-up, collaborative, and participative approach to the development of services, land and buildings on Scotland’s islands.

The event highlighted two key themes in relation to place-based working in Scottish islands:
  1. Local Action - The stories shared from Orkney, Benbecula and Tiree were inspiring and it's clear there is amazing action already happening locally and at a community level in islands.
  2. Strategic action - To ensure island investment is well aligned to deliver on the multiple needs of island places, strategic thinking needs to happen collectively, at a ‘whole island’ level.
If you wish to watch and listen to the recording, it's available via the link below.

And following on from the story above, in The Scotsman last week, Alix Medlyn Davies from our Place team had an article published that looks at how the 2018 Islands (Scotland) Act is to achieve economic equality across the islands and how we are supporting The Scottish Government in its Islands Programme.
