Roundtable: How Can Charities Effectively Help Animals in Asia?

Animal charities are doing important work in Asia, but the animal protection movement there is still relatively young. Despite this, there have been many positive developments for animal protection in the region. We think now is an excellent time for charities to gain a better understanding of the opportunities to effectively help animals in Asia, as well as the barriers. We asked four leaders in the Asian animal protection movement to share their insights on how charities can effectively help animals in Asia and support the growing movement.

Prioritization Between Farmed and Wild-Caught Fishes

There are various ways animal advocates can help fishes: the group of vertebrate animals killed in the highest numbers for human consumption. While interventions to decrease animal consumption or increase the availability of animal-free products can help both farmed and wild-caught fishes, prioritizing between the two can help determine how to improve fish welfare most effectively. Here, we use the scale, tractability, and neglectedness framework to prioritize between farmed and wild-caught fishes.

What is the Effect of Institutional Outreach on the Availability of Animal-Free Products?

Institutional outreach is an intervention in which organizations work with non-corporate institutions and attempt to influence the food products they purchase and serve. Currently, there is no peer-reviewed research available about influencing the availability of animal-free products through institutional outreach. However, we could learn from studies that investigate the effectiveness of outreach on increasing the availability of “healthy foods.” Two out of four studies we reviewed found that institutional outreach was significantly associated with increased availability of healthy foods.
