Dear <<First Name>>,
View from the Study
The positive impact of a consistent role model can never be over-estimated. Queen Elizabeth II’s 70 year reign bestrides a period of bewildering change – and yet, her devotion to her country, her faith and her family have remained constant.
As Winston Churchill (the first of the Queen’s 14 Prime Ministers) said, ‘The longer you can look back, the further you can look forward.’
I hope that, as we celebrate the Queen’s remarkable achievement and look to celebrate our own significant milestone of 100 years this time next year, we can learn the lessons of the past and recognise the value of steadfast and loyal service.
There are few more important lessons that we can teach our children.

Bunting Rules at the Jubilee Party! |
|
Sophy Campbell and the PTFA organised a wonderful Jubilee Party on the night of Thursday 26th May - it was a great joy to welcome so many to a Sports Hall bedecked with bunting.
Union Jack flags festooned the hall, creating the effect of an indoor marquee; beautifully cut home-grown flowers garlanded the long trestle tables and endless Jubilee-themed games (pin the tail on the Corgi) occupied our 130 guests.
As well as celebrating the Queen’s extraordinary milestone, the event was designed to raise funds for new play equipment for the children – two raffles, a Royal quiz and a game of Heads or Tails gave everyone the chance to get involved and win some fantastic prizes. There was even a photo booth featuring a cardboard cut-out of Her Majesty!
Thank you to all that helped to put on a memorable Belhaven evening – the event raised just over £1000 on the night and, with ticket sales to come, we hope to be able to invest in some exciting new equipment over the coming weeks. |

Back into the Rhythm of Concerts |
On the last two Fridays, Belhaven has hosted two concerts as we celebrate the ability to get back together and encourage the children to perform.
The true impact of the loss of two years’ worth of opportunity is yet to be seen, but it is noticeable that there is a greater level of anxiety about performance, and it is therefore so important that we continue to create these opportunities.
You can read more of the excellent Pre-Prep Concert in the review below. To see 26 pianists – a quarter of the school – performing to such a high standard last Friday was incredibly exciting.
The focus on introduction and presentation, as well as the attention to the musical detail in performance, was outstanding – most importantly, those that played will feel a great deal more confident the next time they step forward. Thank you, Mrs. Sym, for your fantastic tuition – if any parents would like the link to the Zoom recording, please email Mr. Langton directly. |

Saying 'Yes' for Record-Breaking Runners! |
|
Every Summer term, the children are given a chance to break the Thursday run record. This is a whole school event – everyone not running is there to support and it is this moment at which you see the true benefit of this Belhaven tradition.
'Yes', it is good for their physical and therefore mental health to run on a regular basis, and, 'yes', it possibly gives us an advantage in matches in those final ten minutes when legs start to tire, but can one justify a compulsory running activity in today’s world?
I strongly believe that the answer is 'yes', and you only needed to see the levels of excitement and support offered by the children to their peers to prove it. True appreciation requires personal experience – everyone who has pushed themselves around the course was able to share in the elation felt by Wilbur, Alfie and George, all of whom beat records for their respective age group.
Well done to you all and thank you to Mr. Curry for all of your work on the Thursday run. |

Pre-Prep News |
Music & Merriment in May |
Over the past fortnight Form 6 have had all sorts of fun and adventures starting off with a visit from the Animal Man Mini Zoo. He brought a wonderful collection of small animals, which the children were able to hold and learn about, including a tarantula, giant snails, a snake, and many more!
The following day we welcomed a videographer to film the children and staff (and Cora!) for our new Pre-Prep video...watch this space! The children had a brilliant time and we finished with a beautiful walk down by the beach looking in rock pools and finding different types of shells. |

Parent Portal Soft Launch |
|
At the beginning of the second half of term, we will be soft launching the Belhaven Hill Parent Portal.
So, please look out for an email after the break with instructions on how to sign up to the parent portal and your unique code to access it. You will be able to link to the portal via the website and / or download an App onto your device. This is how, in future, the school will collect information (eg bus sign up, surfing activity, etc) and share information (eg team lists, policies, news, etc).
As this is just a soft launch, you will still be able to access all relevant parent information as you do now, via the website, until the end of the academic year. However, from September, this information will be removed from the website and will then be accessible only via the Portal. |

Marathon Effort! |
|
Congratulations to Mr. Purkiss and Izzy, who completed the Edinburgh Marathon this Sunday! Izzy wanted to tick off one of her bucket list ambitions and for Mr. Purkiss, it was further training in his quest for Ironman status and proof of his desire to push himself beyond the boundaries of what he had previously thought possible.
Can you guess his time? There will be a prize for the Belhaven pupil with the nearest answer...
We know that several OBs also ran in the event and will be including their stories and photos in the next OB Eagle’s Eye, out next month. |
