 RE:writes

Welcome to re:books

Money may not be the most important thing in life, but it is reasonably close to oxygen on the “got to have some” scale. And yes, I do believe love IS more important than dollars, but does love conquer your dentist appointments? Thought so.

Which is why I put my foot down when I was asked to interview a bestselling author and hold a live event FOR FREE. Why are creatives the only ones who should accept free work? No, thanks 😤. The worst part? I only got $250 out of it. And while lots of writers think this is great for one little interview, I was not thrilled. Read why, plus some tough-love advice on why you, writers and authors, should start saying no to unpaid gigs here.

Maya, meanwhile, is pining over the Johnny Depp v. Amber Heard trial, like most people, and is searching for a good toxic relationship fix in books! If you're also feeling trial withdrawal, here are some page-turning reads that'll help ease the pain.

Are you all caught up with my new book, I've Got Issues...? Read the first 11 chapters here. (New chapter coming soon, promise!)

Until next time, flip your hair and flip the page!

xoxo,

 What I'm RE:ading

A balancing act of fiction and non-fiction.

Tea & Treachery (Kensington, 2021) is a delightful first novel in a new series from Canadian cozy mystery queen Vicky Delany. In it, Lily leaves New York to run a teashop near her grandmother’s bed and breakfast on Cape Cod. While she’s there, she becomes immersed in a murder mystery to help her grandmother out of a jam. This light and enjoyable read even includes recipes for your next teatime.

A Good Wife: Escaping the Life I Never Chose (HarperCollins, 2019) is Samra Zafar's true story about being a teenager forced into an arranged marriage halfway across the world in Canada, where she is isolated from her family and abused. She writes about her journey from being helpless to finding freedom and success as a single mother. I read this book during a very difficult time in my life after I left my partner. It was literally my inspiration to change my mindset and my life. Perhaps it will inspire you, too.

So nice I've read it twice.

An Audience of Chairs by Joan Clark (Knopf Canada, 2006) tells the story of Moranna MacKenzie and her battle with grief and bipolar disorder. Set in Cape Breton, Moranna seems to be a burden to the few people in her life. However, the author’s compassionate depiction of mental illness makes Moranna seem delicate and vulnerable, leaving the reader invested in her longing to find peace.

For the romantics.

Paradise Cove by Jenny Holiday (Grand Central Publishing, 2020) is an emotional, heartwarming romance novel about a doctor who moves to a small town to nurse her broken heart. Soon, she meets an equally broken man. Can they heal each other, or is their sorrow too much to bear? Oh, and it's the perfect beach read for the summer!

 book RE:port

“There’s always a line in a romance, ‘He rested his hand on the curve of her hip.’ What if that curve of the hip was larger? He can 100% be attracted to that. ”

— Danielle Jackson, author of The Accidental Pin-Up (July 19 release). Jackson speaks of "seeing our real selves" in romance novelsalong with other female authors and publishers who are hopeful about the future of fat-positive romance.

Thank you, readers, for your support.
"Honestly, if your aim was to get people reading, it is working. Each week, I see something I want to read here. So my TBR (to be read) list is pretty insane right now! And I LOVE how authentic you are. Is it wrong I want to be your friend?"
