Memorial Day Observance

On this very sacred holiday, we pay homage to the brave men and women who have paid the ultimate sacrifice so that you and I can enjoy the freedoms that we have become accustomed to in this great nation. Their sacrifice isn’t the only one we recognize; it is important to keep their family and friends in mind as well. For some, today might be a day off from work or a time to enjoy family and friends over a meal but for others, it’s grim reminder that freedom is not free. In the words of John F. Kennedy, “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter the words, but to live by them.” -JFK

DeKalb Announces $1 Million in Youth Safety and Violence Prevention Grants

DeKalb County announces the availability of $1 million in funding for the DeKalb Youth Safety and Violence Prevention Grant initiative, through which the county will partner with local nonprofits that provide youth violence prevention and intervention strategies.

“We have to everything we can do to prevent acts of senseless violence, especially mass shootings, that are plaguing our nation,” DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond said. “These grants will help support community groups that are already working to reduce violence, keep youth off of the streets and invest in the lives of our youth.”

A virtual public meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 1, at 10 a.m. to provide information on the grant application process.

Fresh on Dek rolls into DeKalb County

Commissioner Robert Patrick is pleased to announce that Pleasantdale Park was selected as one of multiple sites throughout DeKalb County that will be home to the Fresh on Dek, Farmers Market. The market provides guests with free pre-bagged fresh fruits and vegetables in communities where access to nutritious food options might be limited. The market rolls into Pleasantdale Park Wednesday, May 25th (5-7 pm) and runs through July 13th of this year. Each Wednesday at Pleasantdale Park, guests will be able to receive pre-bagged produce while supplies last. Additionally, those who attend will have access to healthy recipes and nutrition information.

Fresh on DeK, the DeKalb County Mobile Market, was created to educate residents living in communities designated as “food deserts” on the importance of healthy living and fresh, in-season produce. The program is able to bring education and fresh produce to food deserts around DeKalb County- by doing this we are aiming to create a healthier community in DeKalb!

Fresh on DeK is made possible with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, DeKalb County Government, DeKalb County Board of Health, and UGA Cooperative Extension.
