NMC Welcomes New Department Manager Rebecca Higgins

The Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations is pleased to welcome new Department Manager Rebecca Higgins, who is taking up NMC’s newly created Department Manager position, effective May 9, 2022. Rebecca has been a Senior Manager and Director of Office Operations for the past five years at Top Hat, a Toronto-based company that specializes in providing technological support to educational institutions for building student engagement, comprehension, and learning.
Prior to Top Hat, Rebecca worked for more than a decade in a number of project and office management roles. She thus brings considerable management experience to her new appointment.

For the first time in two years, the University of Toronto plans to welcome our graduating students in-person to Spring Convocation being held June 2 - 24, 2022, at Convocation Hall, subject to any changes in public health guidance. There are 32 individual ceremonies scheduled in this three-week period. For further details and to locate your ceremony, visit the Find your Ceremony page, where you can filter the various ceremonies. There will also be live-streaming every ceremony on the Convocation page.

A&S Discover Research

The Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations is excited to be part of the Discover Research Project, which will promote NMC's research and scholarly activities. 
Discover Research, managed by Vice-President, Research & Innovation (VPRI), is a new online tool to highlight, celebrate and promote U of T's research experts. It allows U of T scholars to showcase their research, publications and expertise to help spark discovery, connection and collaboration.

The Canadian Society for Mesopotamian Studies has recently published its latest issue of the Journal, which includes articles from a number of NMC faculty, staff, and students.
Volume 14 includes an article by Associate Professor Heather Baker entitled “Reconstructing Ancient Babylon: Myth and Reality”, and an article by Professor and Interim Chair Paul-Alain Beaulieu entitled “What’s in a Name? Babylon and its Designations throughout History.” 
In the Notes from the Field section, the Gadachrili Gora Regional Archaeological Project Excavations (GRAPE) is featured in an article co-authored by recent NMC PhD graduate Khaled Abu Jayyab, “Experiences and Ceramic Analysis: Training a Research Team”, as well as a multi-authored piece on NMC’s Tayinat Archaeological Project by Senior Research Associate and Lecturer Stephen Batiuk, Professor Timothy Harrison, Archaeology Lab Collections Manager Stanley Klassen, PhD student Zeynep Kuşdil Sak, and Assistant Professor Lynn Welton.

The Association for Iranian Studies (AIS) has recently published Iranian Studies, Volume 55, Issue 2.
Iranian Studies is a peer-reviewed multidisciplinary journal, concerning everywhere with a Persian or Iranian legacy, especially Iran, Afghanistan, Central Asia, the Caucasus and northern India, and Iranians in the diaspora (Cambridge University Press, 2022).
The Journal is available to AIS members by logging into their accounts, and it is available to non-members for purchase.

Awards Opportunities

The James W. Redhouse Student Prize 

The Redhouse Prize for Best Progress in Turkish was established by the Turkish Studies Association (now Ottoman and Turkish Studies Association) in 1991, and four such prizes continue to be available annually, two for each of two regions in North America, designated as East and West.

Walter G. Andrews
Ottoman Turkish Translation Award

The American Association of Teachers of Turkic Languages (AATT) is pleased to announce the Walter G. Andrews Ottoman Turkish Translation competition for the two best translations of an Ottoman archival/historical or literary work into English. A prize of $250 will be awarded to a graduate or undergraduate student who has taken one or two semesters of Ottoman Turkish in 2021 - 2022 or participated in an Ottoman Turkish summer program, and who has submitted the most successful portfolio. A second prize of $250 will be awarded to a graduate or undergraduate student who has taken three or more semesters/summer programs of Ottoman Turkish and will compete in an advanced proficiency level.

Norman Itzkowitz
Turkish Short Story Award 

Norman Itzkowitz (May 6, 1931- January 20, 2019), Emeritus Professor of Near Eastern Studies at Princeton University, was one of the most original scholars of the Near East and wrote numerous pioneering works on the classical period of the Ottoman Empire and on the modern Turkish Republic. Two prizes of $250 each will be awarded to the two best short stories in Modern Turkish language written by graduate or undergraduate students whose works will compete in two categories: beginner/intermediate or advanced proficiency level.

Association for Iranian Studies: 2022 Conference

The Association for Iranian Studies (AIS) is hosting its 13th Biennial Iranian Studies Conference from August 30 to September 2, 2022, at the University of Salamanca. Located in northwestern Spain, Salamanca has a history dating back to the Celtic era and is known for its ornate sandstone architecture and its university.
