8 June webinar - From athletes to older adults: Food-focused approaches for maximising the health effects of protein

It is increasingly recognised that the food in which protein is contained can impact its health effects. The webinar will examine food-focused approaches for optimising protein nutrition - ‘from athletes to the elderly, in particular, the effects of the food/dairy matrix.

During this webinar, we will hear from our expert speakers, Dr Nicolas Burd and Dr Caoileann Murphy, that optimising protein nutrition for muscle recovery in athletes or maintaining muscle health in older people is more complex than simply recommending a total daily protein intake.

The role of dietitians in obesity management at ECO22

With an appealing programme with nine speakers across Europe, the role of dietitians in Obesity Management in Primary Care was discussed on the first day of the European Congress on Obesity (ECO22). Topics included the new European Dietetic Obesity Guidelines on adults and children and the implementation of interventions into primary care. The importance of patient point of view and a holistic approach were also addressed.

The session started with a presentation from Kremlin Wickramasinghe, WHO European region, NCD office, on the burden of overweight and obesity and ended with an inspiring presentation by Jacqueline Bowman from OPEN-EU on policymaking and how to influence to promote obesity management.

This European Association of the Study of Obesity (EASO) Nutrition Working Group session was organized by our EFAD specialist network, ESDN Obesity, led by Maria Hassapidou and Ellen Govers.

ECO22, the joint congress on obesity of EASO and the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and metabolic disorders-European Chapter took place in Maastricht the Netherlands (4-7 May).

The 30th Congress is planned for 17-20 May 2023 in Dublin, Ireland.

Creating equality in nutritional care

This was the leading message of the international ONCA conference held in Copenhagen in May.

Despite overwhelming scientific evidence, malnutrition is often underdiagnosed and under-treated, causing unacceptable inequalities between people and countries. Optimal nutritional care must be considered a human right and patients should have equitable, timely access to the nutritional care needed to achieve their best possible outcome.

During the one-and-a-half-day conference, experts in nutritional care, patient organizations and policymakers identified barriers and discussed good practices for the implementation of nutritional care in policy and practice. EFAD was represented by our Honorary President, Annemieke van Ginkel, during the “Joining forces” roundtable on the first day and Nicole Erickson presented “Malnutrition: effective nutrition strategies in practice” during the second day of the conference.

The dietitian is an important link in the chain of optimal nutrition care. This was evident in the various presentations and breakout sessions. EFAD strongly emphasizes collaborating in multidisciplinary teams, including patients and management, to work towards prevention and management of malnutrition. Best quality, evidence-based practice and outcome recording need to be embedded. The ONCA meeting inspired participants to further collaborate at national and international levels to address malnutrition and improve nutritional care in Europe.

The ONCA Conference is organized by ENHA (European Nutrition for Health Alliance) a charity, established to promote and implement nutritional risk screening and improve nutritional care for all European citizens. EFAD is a member of ENHA.

Research and Evidence-Based Practice (REBPC) Committee spotlight

An update on what the committee has been working on.

The REBPC launched their innovation in European dietetics research project during March. This exciting study aims to identify how dietitians across Europe adapted and innovated their practice due to COVID-19. We know that dietitians are both creative and resilient so we want to capture that information and be able to highlight how innovative European dietitians really are! We are excited to share the results of the project later on this year so others can learn from your innovations.

At the end of 2021 and the start of this year, we also conducted a research in practice survey on how much research different types of dietitians do in their daily practice across Europe. We did this survey because we are interested in supporting dietitians to get involved in research. The survey gathered information from EFAD members on research in practice across dietitians in different work settings. We are now analyzing this data and will be able to share the results by the end of the summer.

Our aim will be that the results will identify potential gaps for either work settings or experience levels that our committee can work to address in the future and help more EFAD members and National Dietetic Associations support research and evidence-based dietetics practice further.

"A clinically relevant diagnosis code for malnutrition in adults is needed in ICD-11"

A new editorial in The Journal of Nutrition, Health & Aging supports the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) initiative for a clinically relevant ICD-11 diagnosis code for malnutrition in adults in the International Classifications of Diseases (ICD). The suggestion has been submitted from Sweden, formally by the National Board of Social Services together with Elisabet Rothenberg and Tommy Cederholm, and is supported by 40 different PEN societies around the world.

The next step in this process is a meeting between representatives from World Health Organization (WHO) and, on the nutrition side, Tommy Cederholm and Gordon L. Jensen representing the American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN).

WHO reveals shocking extent of exploitative formula milk marketing

WHO says formula milk companies are paying social media platforms and influencers to gain direct access to pregnant women and mothers at some of the most vulnerable moments in their lives. The global formula milk industry, valued at some $55 billion, is targeting new mothers with personalized social media content that is often not recognizable as advertising.

WHO: Reducing the harm from alcohol by regulating cross-border alcohol marketing

This new WHO report details the full extent of the way that alcohol is being marketed across national borders – often by digital means – and often regardless of the social, economic or cultural environment in receiving countries. It highlights how increasingly sophisticated advertising and promotion techniques are being used to increase customer loyalty and gain new customers.

It shows that young people and heavy drinkers are increasingly targeted by alcohol advertising, often to the detriment of their health, and highlights the need for more effective national regulations and better international collaboration.
