Brendan O'Connor appointed skills minister in Albanese government

Senior Labor frontbencher Brendan O'Connor has been appointed Minister for Skills and Training in the new Albanese Ministry, announced tonight.

Mr O'Connor was Shadow Defence Minister while in Opposition and has served as a senior minister in the Rudd and Gillard governments. He represents the electorate of Gorton in Victoria.

Richard Marles who held the Employment portfolio in Opposition becomes Defence Minister.

Jason Clare is the Minister for EducationTanya Plibersek who was Shadow Education Minister becomes Minister for the Environment and Water.

Mr O'Connor is one of the most experienced members of the Albanese government, having held a series of portfolios including Minister for Skills and Training in the second Rudd ministry in 2013.

He also served as Minister for Housing; Minister for Immigration & Citizenship; Minister for Small Business; Minister for Employment; Minister for Employment Participation; Minister for Human Services; and Minister for Home Affairs.

One of the 60-year old's major reforms was the creation of a streamlined Job Services Australia to replace the former Job Network.

Ministers will be sworn in tomorrow.

Mr Albanese announced today that the first parliamentary sitting will commence on Tuesday 26 July.
