DS: The long-awaited GSL & GSIL backstop of 45lpw is finalized, including timelines.

DOE Publishes Two Final Rules for GSL Definition & Backstop
Source: LightNow / David Shiller

The DOE published two final rules for the General Service Lamps (GSL) definition and the backstop on April 26, 2022. Before this date, the big unknown was the timing of the effective date and the dates of enforcement.

The definition rule is effective in 60 days, and the GSL rule is effective in 75 days. Manufacturers will get enforcement leniency to allow some time for the transition. Full DOE enforcement of both rules begins January 1, 2023.

DS: A new category of HID replacement lamps has arrived that are definitely not “corn cobs.”

Product Monday: New Category of LED Filament Lamps for HID Replacement
Source: LightNow / David Shiller

A new category of HID replacement lamps has arrived that are definitely not “corn cobs.” They are high lumen output LED filament lamps in traditional HID lamp form factors. I’ve found wattages as high as 42W (LED) that claim to replace up to 175W Metal Halide or HPS system watts (HID lamp + ballast), providing up to 75% energy savings. All of the models that I’ve found are ballast-bypass, 120-277VAC input voltage, Type B. Some lamps are E26 and some are E39/EX39. Here are three early entrants into this new category.

DS: The DLC publishes a new whitepaper about non-white LED light sources for outdoor lighting. This topic is critically important. Mounting scientific evidence attributes global large scale die-offs of insect and bird populations to white LED lighting.

Whitepaper: Non-White Light Sources for Nighttime Environments
Source: DLC

The lighting industry needs an integrated approach to solving the unintended negative consequences of light pollution on the natural environment. In response to this need, the DLC has published a whitepaper that seeks to describe the landscape for a small but promising part of the solution: non-white light (NWL) LED light sources.

This whitepaper provides an overview of the state of the science and current recommendations for NWL light sources in outdoor lighting applications, as well as why the DLC is not addressing NWL LED luminaires in LUNA at this time. The paper suggests next steps to address gaps in existing research, standards, and guidelines that would make qualification feasible in the future.

DS: New research determines the UV dosage that kills COVID.

New Study Proves Correct Dosage for UV Disinfection Against COVID-19
Source: EC&M

When the COVID-19 pandemic emerged in early 2020, ultraviolet (UV) radiation became one of the go-to methods for preventing the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, along with facemasks, hand sanitizer, and social distancing.

The problem: There was little research showing what UV dosage kills the virus. What wavelength? How long? And could UV systems be installed in public places such as airports, bus stations and stores without causing long-term damage to people?

In a newly published study, researchers from Binghamton University’s Thomas J. Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science answer many of those questions and lay the foundation for health standards about what offers true disinfection.

DS: Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-champaign (UIUC) demonstrate that switching to novel, cubic (c)-phase LEDs reduces efficiency droop by over 90% versus conventional h-LED. Efficiency droop is reduced to just a few percent.

Cubic-Phase III-Nitride LEDs Overcome Efficiency Droop
Source: Semiconductor Today

Annually, lighting accounts for 15% of global electricity consumption and 5% of worldwide greenhouse-gas emissions. In the USA alone, the transition to solid-state lighting has already reduced lighting-related energy needs and greenhouse-gas emissions by about 25% with respect to non-solid-state lighting (SSL). However, the average household energy consumption for lighting is set to triple over the next 50 years due to population growth and an increase in housing size. Accelerating the transition to energy-efficient lighting is one of the most significant initiatives to improve the global economy and climate conditions.

DS: Introducing an EV charger in a light pole...

Product Monday: EV Charger in a Light Pole
Source: LightNow / David Shiller

The fast growing EV charging market and the lighting world are starting to collide. StressCrete Group, manufacturers of spun concrete poles and light fixtures operating across North America, announced today the launch of their new product, the VoltLock. The VoltLock is a concealed Level II Electric Vehicle (EV) charging station built into StressCrete’s popular Alexander pole. It provides a discrete and convenient way for EV owners to charge their cars. As the charging station is encased in the concrete pole, it has even more protection against tampering, helping consumers access a consistent and reliable EV charging source for their cars, while saving cities and communities on maintenance costs each year. The VoltLock is designed with communities in mind and is compatible with various EVSE suppliers to meet consumers’ specific needs. FLO, a leading North American EV charging network operator and supplier of smart charging solutions, has been chosen by StressCrete Group as the inaugural charging equipment supplier for the VoltLock.

DS: Lighting supply-chain problems evolve and worsen overall.

Lighting Industry Supply Chain Continues to Evolve
Source: LightNow / David Shiller

A recent LEDs Magazine article laid out ways that the lighting industry supply chain problems are not only changing constantly, but likely getting worse:
  • Shanghai lockdowns for roughly 6 weeks are significantly impacting both factories and the port there, adding delays. Shanghai is the world’s largest shipping port.
  • The war in Ukraine is impacting steel, aluminum, and some other commodity prices.
  • The microchip shortage continues to impact drivers and smart lighting components.
  • Commodity prices in general continue to rise.
  • Long-term container backlogs at US ports have eased, however, providing one bright spot.

DS: Bioluminescence manufacturer Glowee lights up a French town.

The French Town Where the Lighting is Alive
Source: bbc.com / Peter Yeung

In a tranquil side room of the Covid-19 vaccination centre in Rambouillet, a small French town around 30 miles (50km) south-west of Paris, a soft blue light emanated from a row of cylindrical tubes. Members of the public who received a vaccine last year were invited to bathe in the glow for a few minutes while they waited in the recovery area.

Soon, the same azure glow will illuminate the nearby, tree-lined Place André Thomé et Jacqueline Thomé-Patenôtre, located just across from the aptly named La Lanterne performance hall, at night. These ethereal experiments are also underway across France, including at the capital's Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle airport.

But unlike standard streetlamps, which often emit a harsh glare and need to be hooked up to the electricity grid, these otherworldly lights are powered by living organisms through a process known as bioluminescence.
