Brian Tyndall
It’s with great sadness that I announce the passing of a brillant former member Brian Tyndall (56 years) who suffered a heart attack last night whilst out running with friends.
Brian was an excellent canoeist who was strong and talented in many disciplines. He excelled at slalom and was Div 1 team K1 champion with myself and Neil Simpson. He was also one of the founders of Hull Canoe Polo International. Both he and Gary Anderson spent hours swimming around PQ rigging the pitches and pontoons in the days before we had proper fixings or dry suits. He had a famous 2 handed polo tackle which launched opposition players skywards towards another pitch. Whilst not strictly legal it made an impact and foreign players generally became less interested in bullying his team mates once he had unleashed his ‘trademark’. He was also great on big WW and the likes of Neil Ward, Mike Leighton benefitted from his river knowledge and leadership.
He moved to Edinburgh and dropped out of paddling choosing a variety of other interest including diving and motorcycling. As with everything Brian did he was thorough and knowledgable and quickly became an expert in these new interests. He has recently got back into paddling, firstly sea kayaking and more recently WW. It’s been excellent being back on the water with him again. Brian was notorious for having a unique ‘taste’ in Kayak and Canoe colour schemes, whilst not to many peoples tastes they were so vivid that they were never likely to get stolen. His latest sea boat could bring on a bought of seasickness from just looking at the colours. Our thoughts are with his family, Alison, Gary, Sarah, Hannah and Jacob.

Marathon racing is conducted in divisions; the lower divisions can use any sort of kayak or canoe but higher divisions use specialised marathon boats, long, narrow and very unstable when stationary!
Canoe polo is played by teams of five and the basic aim is for them to pass the ball from player to player, by hand, and score in their opponents’ goal while at the same time defending their own goal.
Slalom competitions take place every weekend throughout the country. Division 4 is suitable for beginners of any age. Slalom helps with the development of speed, boat control and white water skills which can be used in all aspects of canoeing and kayaking.
