THE 2022 'YOUNG MATHEMATICAL STORY AUTHOR' (YMSA) COMPETITION OUTCOMES
This year, we received entries from 759 students across 58 schools and homeschooling sites in 10 countries around the world, making this year's competition our most successful one in terms of the submission volume.

With that in mind, we are pleased to announce that:

the winner of the 2022 Stuart J. Murphy Award (the 8-11 years category) is Miriam Iannazzi (11 years old) from Southlands British School Rome (Italy) for her entry, titled 'We Are Different But the Same', and

the winner of the 2022 Cindy Neuschwander Award (the 12-15 years old category) is Elleanore Phillips (14 years old) from Townley Grammar School for Girls (UK) for her entry, titled 'Plotting For A Good Cause'.

For each award, we also have a number of shortlistees and longlistees.

We would like to congratulate each and every one of them! They did really well in creating a mathematical story picture book that closely met our judging criteria.

You can read the winning, shortlisted and longlisted entries, the authors' inspiration for their stories, and the judges' comments by clicking on the photos below.

THE STUART J. MURPHY AWARD
(THE 8-11 YEARS OLD CATEGORY)

THE CINDY NEUSCHWANDER AWARD
(THE 12-15 YEARS OLD CATEGORY)

The YMSA competition is the world's first annual international competition set up to encourage young mathematics learners (8-15 years old) from around the world to embed their mathematics learning in a meaningful and engaging context through creating their own mathematical story picture books. This competition is organised by MathsThroughStories.org

The winner in each of the two entry categories (8-11 and 12-15 years old) will receive an award of £100, and their school will also receive £100. (In case of homeschooled children winning, they would get £100 and their nominated local public library would too get £100.) The awards are generously sponsored by HarperCollins and Charlesbridge.

The winning, shortlisted and longlisted entries from the previous years can be found here: 2019, 2020 and 2021.

Details of our 2023 YMSA competition are now available here.

We very much look forward to receiving YMSA entries from many more students across many more countries next year!

MathsThroughStories.org is a non-profit and research-based initiative. It sets out to encourage teachers and parents globally to use stories to enhance mathematics teaching.

We firmly believe that the use of mathematical stories, particularly in the picture book format, can help mathematics learners develop their conceptual understanding in mathematical concepts and foster positive attitudes towards the subject.
