Why we love a good Jubilee knees-up

The bunting's up, the flags are out, the big holiday weekend is here at last! Across the land there will be four days of street parties, food & drink, singing & music, plus some time in front of the telly watching national events. All to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen's 70 years on the throne.

Most of us love a good party: Royal Jubilee events prompt community celebrations like nothing else seems to. Certainly they offer a welcome distraction from much that troubles us, however I think there is more to it than that. They offer a brief reminder of something wonderful to come.

Hear these words from the book of Zephaniah* in the bible:

Sing aloud, shout!  Rejoice and exult with all your heart, you shall fear disaster no more. God is in your midst, he will rejoice over you with gladness and loud singing as on a festival. God will bring you home, gather you, restore your fortunes.

These words describe the celebration that will come when God finally returns to rescue his people. I think we instinctively warm to the idea of a celebration, because it gives us a foretaste - albeit fleeting and imperfect - of what God has in store for us (what we commonly call 'heaven').

God bless you, your majesty!

Enjoy the celebrations and join us on Sunday as we also celebrate Pentecost: 9:30am for the service in church and 11:00am for a Jubilee celebration in the churchyard.

Great Hampden PCC Secretary

Thank you to all who attended St Mary Magdalene, Great Hampden's AGM, and especially Rob Merrick who stood as PCC Secretary after a number of years. We really do need to refresh the PCC with new members, as we enter into an exciting period of life for our church. In particular, we do need a PCC Secretary. It is an important but not onerous role, as the PCC meets about six times a year. Please do speak to Val or the clergy about joining the PCC.

Regular Giving

Regular Giving

You can give regularly through the Parish Giving Scheme.  The Parish Giving Scheme (PGS) is a secure, established service for managing Direct Debit donations, designed to support churches to fund their mission and ministry.

We would like you to make a regular monthly payment, as this helps us to plan ahead for the year. A sizable proportion of us give between £50 and £250 per month, with some giving less and some giving more. We all need to give proportionately to support the work of our church. This means thinking about what other costs we have in our lives, and valuing our church and its life sensibly within that.

The PGS makes it possible for donors to:

  • Donate monthly, quarterly or annually by Direct Debit
  • Sign up to inflation-linked giving annually
  • Enhance your gift to your church by having Gift Aid at 25% added to your giving
  • Give securely and donate anonymously, if you prefer
