BOYNTON YARDS CUTS FIRST RIBBON
101 SOUTH STREET OPENS WITH LIFE SCIENCE TENANTS

The City of Somerville marked a new chapter on May 5th when community leaders, local artists, musicians, and scientists came together to celebrate the milestone opening of 101 South Street, the first purpose-built lab building as part of the approved Boynton Yards master plan.

Somerville Mayor @katjanaballantyne, City Councilor J.T. Scott , and Flagship Pioneering CEO Noubar Afeyan joined the Boynton Yards team on the 101 South green to cut the official ribbon and welcome employees of the building’s new life sciences tenants Cellarity, Tessera Therapeutics, Laronde, and Generate Biomedicines to our Boynton Yards life sciences and cultural community. We’re all in as we continue to make history together through a community-driven development process that fosters creativity and growth.

Next up? Building 2.

BUILDING 2 CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

It’s been a busy three months for our construction team with excavation, bracing, and pile driving keeping the Building 2 site active. With so much happening across the site, our Boynton Yards team and @shawmut_builds recently hosted a construction ‘lunch and learn’ in our new 101 South conference center to engage those who are curious about what’s happening outside their window.

WE'RE COMMUNITY DRIVEN

While progress continues on the second parcel of the 1.8M square foot approved Boynton Yards master plan site, community meetings have been ongoing on future parcels. In April and May, meetings were held to discuss concepts for Thoroughfare One as well as for Building 3 at 99 South Street, the third lab planned at Boynton Yards. In addition, neighborhood meetings were held to discuss initial concepts for the redevelopment of the adjacent Nissenbaum property. Thank you to Councilor JT Scott for hosting and to our great neighbors for participating. We value community input!

READY TO ROCK AGAIN?

The 0 Windsor Street parking lot will rock again this summer with the ONCE at Boynton Yards crew for eight festivalesque outdoor concerts from June through September. Last year 5,000+ community members turned out to mix it up with the best of the local music scene. This year’s series kicks off June 11 with art, games, giveaways and more as we celebrate SomerPride with a cooler-than-cool talent line up. Check out the full ONCE at Boynton Yards concert schedule here.

BUILD WELL, BE WELL

Here at Boynton Yards, we’re delivering an environmentally and socially responsible project. How? Our buildings will be LEED certifiable – the world’s most widely used green building certification, which requires buildings to be healthy, highly efficient, and environmentally sound. At 101 South, scientists of Flagship Pioneering-founded companies are creating breakthroughs in human health and sustainability as they conduct global research in their new modern lab.

AND, WE'RE ROLLING...

We became Green Line connected in March when the @thembta green line train began running extending service to our nearby Union Square station. Boynton Yards @celtics and @nhlbruins fans can now head to a game in minutes at the @tdgarden on Somerville’s #UnionSquare @mbta Green Line train to #Boston’s #NorthStation. Enjoy the ride!

DID SOMEONE SAY BEER?

@porticobrewing will soon call 101 South @boynton_yards its permanent home with a new modern brewery and taproom located on the ground floor corner of the building. Portico plans to serve up its classic brews (including our favorite Fuzzy Logic!) in addition to all-new rotating selections. July can’t come soon enough!

ART AND MAKER HUDDLE INGENUITY

The creative community turned out in spades to join Mayor @katjanaballantyne and the Somerville Arts Council at The Hive at 561 Windsor Street for our first Boynton Yards Maker Huddle. We’re ACE #placemaking and look forward to more artist and maker events here soon.

LOCAL ART SURROUNDS US

Thanks to local artists for adding some creative color across the Boynton Yards site.
The Phoenix mural at 101 South Firefly café, created by Boston area artist @blindfoxart.
The Resilience of Optimism mural on the South Street fence created by Somerville artist @adelaidebruce.
Picnic tables at The Hive and thoroughfare jersey barriers painted by Somerville artists Liz Lamanche, Wiley Holton, Emily Perelman, Mike Durkee, Kaitlyn Ripaldi, Melinda Cross, and April Jakubec Duggal.

COMMUNITY FRIDGE

Boynton Yards and 101 South Street employees are helping @somervillecommunityfridge tackle food insecurity by donating food and essential items to help restock Community Fridge locations across Somerville. We’re also happy to be partnering again this year with Union Square Main Streets to support the Union Square Farmers Market. Come by our Boynton Yards booth to learn more about our social impact partner CAAS while picking up fresh local produce.

TENANT APPRECIATION

Since our life sciences and artist tenant community keeps growing, we’re showing our appreciation with pop-up events throughout the year. In April @theactiveworkplacellc helped keep 101 South employees relaxed and recharged with chair massages, and in May we celebrated National Bike Month with bike tune-ups in our 101 South bike room.  With a bike wash, repair station, showers, and lockers, commuting by bike is more convenient than ever!

SOCIAL IMPACT

And one last shout out…please join us in supporting and thanking our social impact partner, the Community Action Agency of Somerville (CAAS) who always work tirelessly to make Somerville a better place for all. You can always catch them at our Boynton Yards events and with us at our booth at the Union Square Farmers Market.
