BA(Hons) Fine Art, MA Fine Art, FAETC

http://www.sarahfjanavicius.co.uk/

Sarah was born in Hitchin, became interested in art at an early age. Upon leaving secondary school, in 1979 she took up full time employment, with British Aerospace, as a trainee Illustrator/Graphic Designer and studied ‘A’ level in Fine Art at a Stevenage College.

In 1981, Sarah emigrated to Sydney, Australia, where she worked as a freelance and contract Technical Artist. On returning to the UK, in 1991, she resumed her study of Art and Graphic Design and took a BTEC National Diploma course in Graphic Design. Almost immediately upon completion of the Graphic Design course, she decided to take up teacher training and in January, 2002 completed both FAETC 7307 Stage 1 and Stage 2. In addition she worked on designing a series of four greetings cards, one series totalling thirty one individual watercolour designs.

Watercolour painting, of course, is always a priority. Her paintings are influenced by her background experience as a graphic designer and through spending 10 years of her life living in, and exploring, Australia. She paints in various techniques, depending on her chosen subject matter, sometimes dry brush but mainly wet on dry, creating little puddles and blobs of paint everywhere. Of course, these wet patches of watercolour must be allowed to dry before continuing painting. It is a slow technique, yet effective as the painting begins to take form. Almost like the piecing together of a jigsaw puzzle. As far as subject matter goes, Sarah is inspired mainly by the natural landscape and its creatures. Compositionally her work is stylized to suit the chosen subject matter. Also, she has been participating in numerous exhibitions and in charge of all publicity graphic design for such events.

Sarah mainly paints in watercolours in bright, bold style of her own. She also paints in other water based media such as acrylic and gouache. Sarah has won highly commended prizes for her paintings, on several occasions, including ‘Artists and Illustrators’ magazine, annual Garden painting competition, in both July 2002 and July 2003. She has also won first prize, in the Sennelier 2003 painting competition.

This is well under way with several sketchbooks on their travels or completed. The completed sketchbooks are available to view on our website here. If you would like to join this project, or have already been involved and would like to be in another sketchbook, please let Tricia know, the next group can then be prepared (you may well be mixed with different artists). There are many new members who have not yet joined a sketchbook - do get in touch if you would like to have a go!
