Whilst COVID-19 rules and restrictions have been lifted in Scotland, research continues. A major new study into the clinical long-term effects of COVID-19 has been published this month in Nature Medicine - the CISCO-19 (Cardiac Imaging in SARS Coronavirus disease-19) study, funded as part of the Scottish Government's Chief Scientist Office (CSO) Rapid Research Response to the pandemic. The largest study of its kind to date, led by the University of Glasgow in collaboration with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, it followed for one year, in real time, 159 patients after they were hospitalised with COVID-19.
Research led by Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) and funded by the CSO has also reported this month in Health Psychology and Behavioral Medicine, on the mental health impact of COVID-19 on gay and bisexual men.
Beyond COVID-19, tackling some of Scotland’s most prevalent health conditions continues to be vital. Three Scottish clinical research projects focused on Multiple Sclerosis, liver disease and survival rates for patients requiring ICU treatment are being run in collaboration between NHS Lothian and the University of Edinburgh, with funding from Precision Medicine Alliance Scotland research awards. Each of these research projects has the potential to dramatically increase available treatment options, improve patient outcomes and support a healthier Scotland.

Also this month, ENRICH Scotland has partnered with charity Iriss to produce new research guidance for care home staff; Maree Todd, Minister for Public Health, Women's Health and Sport, endorses a new endometriosis research call; and CSO funded research with Glasgow Caledonian University investigating the development of a primary care-initiated hepatitis Ctreatment pathway in Scotland has been published in British Journal of General Practice. Looking forward, the Health Research Authority (HRA) invite you to join them at their new strategy launch on 8 June, and the Red4Research campaign returns on Friday 17 June, to thank clinical research staff and promote their work.

Developing a hepatitis C treatment pathway in Scotland A new study from Glasgow Caledonian University, funded by the Chief Scientist Office, looked at developing a primary care-initiated HCV treatment pathway for people who use drugs, and recommend theory-informed interventions to help embed that pathway into practice.Read more
Scottish study could change heart and lung treatment A study led by researchers from NHS Golden Jubilee and the University of Glasgow into the effects of COVID-19 on Scottish patients in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) has confirmed evidence that the virus is associated with impaired function of the right side of the heart.
