World Hospice and Palliative Care Day Workshop 29 June 2022

World Hospice and Palliative Care Day 2022 will be celebrated on 8th October. The WHPCA  collaborated with the International Children’s Palliative Care Network (ICPCN), Palliative Care in Humanitarian Aid Situations and Emergencies (PallCHASE), and the International Association for Hospice and Palliative Care (IAHPC) to mark this day. We will be advocating for people living with palliative care needs with a focus on grief and loss in line with this year's theme: Healing Hearts and Communities.

The WHPCA team is finalising on the World Hospice and Palliative Care Day (WHPCD) Toolkit and it will be launched soon. Please be on the lookout in the coming weeks.

We would like to invite you for a free WHPCD 2022 toolkit launch and workshop webinar on 29 June 2022 at 8 AM Eastern Time. We will be unpacking the 2022 theme and sub-themes, rationale, evidence, and key messages. In addition, we will discuss how to plan a communications campaign using the WHPCD toolkit and best practices for success.  We would also like to hear your experiences, success, and challenges in previous campaigns. We will share the link and programme in the coming days.

Please diarise the date in your calendar 29 June 2022 at 8 AM Eastern Time. We look forward to having you.

INCB questionnaire for civil society organisations

The International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) has prepared a questionnaire for civil society organisations, asking to provide supplementary information at the national level on the situation in the consumption of and access to internationally controlled substances for medical and scientific purposes.

The INCB is preparing a supplementary progress report on the Availability of Internationally Controlled Drugs, to be launched in early 2023. This new report will follow up on the recommendations of the 2015 and 2018 Availability Reports and the 2016 UNGASS Outcome Document. A questionnaire has been sent to competent national authorities of Member States for the provision of data on the availability of controlled drugs for medical and scientific purposes. The deadline to respond the questionnaire is 10 June 2022. Please find more information here INCB questionnaire for civil society organisations on the availability of internationally controlled substances for medical and scientific purposes (idpc.net)

Support Palliative Care Patients in Ukraine

WHPCA with partners ICPCN, PallCHASE, and the Elisabeth Kubler-Ross Foundation have been running a Global Giving campaign for three months to raise funds to support palliative care patients in Ukraine and affected countries nearby. We would like to appreciate your support in raising funds to reach the $ 50,000 target.

With your help, we have managed to raise some funds but we still have a long way to go. Unity is strength and when we come together, we are able to achieve more than what we think is possible. We still need your help to spread the word and help us raise the funds to save and impact lives in Ukraine. Your generous donation big or small, will help seriously ill people in Ukraine and rebuild access to palliative care once the war and hostilities come to an end.

Together we can do this. "It always seems impossible until it is done." - Nelson Mandella

7th APCA International Conference

The African Palliative Care Association (APCA) 7th International African Palliative Care Conference, co-hosted by the Worldwide Hospice Palliative Care Alliance (WHPCA), will take place on 24 – 26 August 2022 in Kampala, Uganda. Several palliative care experts, carers, donors, and patients will gather at this conference for three days to share their experiences. The conference is expected to attract guests including several country ministers of health & dignitaries, and government technical officials.

For the first time, the conference will be a hybrid event due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Please find more information and register here.

Global Atlas of Palliative Care

In 2014 the World Health Assembly passed the resolution 67.19, titled “Strengthening of palliative care as a component of comprehensive care throughout the life course.” This resolution for the first time called on all nations to strengthen palliative care and to ensure its availability.

The Global Atlas of Palliative Care is a source of essential information on the status of palliative care worldwide. This second edition of the Global Atlas reveals some of the changes that have occurred since the first edition was published in 2014. For instance, we now have a better idea of how many people need palliative care worldwide.

You can download the new Global Atlas of Palliative Care here.
