Happy 20th Anniversary, San Antonio Aerospace (SAA)!

In April this year, our airframe facility in San Antonio, U.S., San Antonio Aerospace (SAA) celebrated its 20th anniversary. Since it opened in 2002, SAA has steadily expanded its operations through the addition of new facilities and capabilities, such as the Passenger to Freighter (P2F) conversion line to support the A320P2F programme by Elbe Flugzeugwerke GmbH (EFW) in December last year. Looking ahead, the plan is to deliver greater value, fostered with safety and quality to our customers, and to grow strength to strength with our employees.

Paving the Road to a Greener Future with Clean Energy

by Boo Kwok Ying

At the 2021 International Air Transport Association (IATA) 77th Annual General Meeting, a resolution was approved for the global air transport industry to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. As the world’s largest airframe MRO solution provider, ST Engineering is committed to reducing our carbon emissions as well as providing products and solutions that enable our customers to operate sustainably.

Transitioning to clean and renewable energy is one of the key pillars in ST Engineering’s sustainability journey. As of March 2022, all three Aerospace facilities in Singapore have been installed with a total of 24,000 solar photovoltaic (PV) panels generating up to 10.2 MWp. This has reduced our annual carbon emissions by 5,300 tonnes and helped meet 40% of the facilities’ operational needs. While we are now the largest solar PV user within Singapore's aviation industry, we are not stopping here – PV panels are being installed at our overseas facilities, while we are studying how to scale up PV installation at the rest of our Singapore facilities.

With Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) being key to reducing carbon footprint for the aviation industry, we have partnered with Safran Helicopter Engines to study the use of SAF in helicopters. The goal of this collaboration is to certify the use of 100% SAF on Safran’s helicopter engines, which could potentially result in carbon emission reductions of up to 80%.
