A BRIEF SUMMARY
Lexi is a spirited little girl who enjoys going on adventures and making all kinds of new friends. There’s just one problem – her intense shyness keeps getting in the way! Lexi’s mother, Kitty, and her niece, Ellette made a promise and secretly arranged an extraordinary adventure for Lexi. She and Kitty journey from London to Ellette’s log cabin deep in the heart of a snow-covered forest in Germany.
There, Lexi is delighted to meet Ellette’s five majestic cats. But all is not as it seems. These cats are indeed magic cats and they are here to guide Lexi on a magical journey of self-discovery. With the help of a few trusted magical creatures, can these magic cats help Lexi overcome her deep feelings of shyness and embarrassment?
EVALUATION
This book is a delightful piece of fantasy fiction for children but it houses a clear purpose. While the illustrations, imagery and story will keep children reading for hours, I also found it remarkably relatable as a full-grown adult reflecting on my childhood. Lexi is a gentle protagonist living her life through the bars of an age-old childhood issue: shyness. I found her representing the struggle with self-doubt that creeps into so many of us at some point during our childhoods. Her story highlights the importance of keeping our minds open to possibilities as well as the importance of good friendships.
She is an inspiring character who demonstrates facing one’s fears and trusting that the process will produce the right outcome. Her story teaches children to feel their emotions, instead of running from them. She provides hope for a new generation of children who are growing up in a society where bullying and feeling unworthy are rife.
RECOMMENDATION
Whether your child is struggling with the same challenges as Lexi, or whether they are simply wanting to escape into a fairytale and magical world, this book will truly be a favourite. And if, like me, you are an adult wanting to reconnect with your childhood, or gain a deeper understanding of how your child might be experiencing the world, you won’t be disappointed. Lexi teaches us all a valuable lesson in what it really means to be brave, especially when that means accepting the help of those who care for us.
Happy reading! Emma
