Ebru Coffee Company

My curiosity was piqued as I passed this establishment during its conversion from a Cumberland Farms gas station to a coffee shop a few years ago. Ebru Coffee is located at the intersection of Egypt Road and Park Avenue in Audubon and has developed a growing fan base after opening in 2018. It was on my radar for some time, so we finally made a couple visits over recent weekends to check it out.

In 2014, Ebru opened a coffee roastery in the Reading suburb of Wyomissing. In 2016 they acquired the Audubon property and opened the current shop in late 2018 as Ebru Coffee Company. The owners shared a bit of background about the Ebru origin - it’s name is “derived from a Turkish word, which traditionally refers to a form of art, however there is a much deeper significance to the art itself - representing a delicate balance between chaos and perfection, and prerequisite of unlimited freedom required for both. That was our original viewpoint when we first approached coffee and sustainability, and the name has stuck around since 2014.” The business strives to incorporate sustainable practices in all aspects of its business and particularly in their supply chain. Numerous varieties of grown beans are sourced globally, including Guatemalan, single-origin Ethiopian, and Nicaraguan beans, all sought with discernment for quality and social responsibility (single family coffee farms, eggs from sustainable farming, compostable bags with manual printing).

The roastery space is open and airy and offers a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy a beverage and some light breakfast fare in the morning and early afternoon. The auto shop garage doors remained after the conversion, as did the bare cement floors, providing an authentic industrial look. Installed “Tools of the Trade” provide evidence that Ebru is serious about it’s coffee - a large Giesen Coffee Roaster (Netherlands) sits prominently amidst customers and I can imagine the aroma of roasting coffee provides an immersive experience when it’s in operation. Also, an Italian Sanremo Espresso Opera 2.0 machine is a signature installation in the food prep area. (It is suspected that these two pieces each have a worth equal to a nice midsize sedan.)

I enjoy coffee but have not developed a refined “nose” or taste for the brew other than grading a particular cup of coffee as good or bad. A former coworker actually had a coffee roaster at home and would roast his own beans. A check on Amazon shows availability of a wide range of roasters ranging in price from fifty to over a thousand dollars.  I do have a coffee bean grinder and a French Press at home to prepare coffee, but that’s the current extent of my coffee hobby. (I suppose I can add this to my bucket list.)

Ebru Coffee Roastery serves up barista creations with a passion to satisfy coffee connoisseurs. They serve a variety of breakfast drinks as well as breakfast sandwiches and baked goods. Latte, Cappuccino, Espresso, Cortado, and Matcha brewed drink varieties are supplemented by breakfast sandwich offerings with options of egg, bacon, cheese, avocado, and tomato on a bagel, croissant or toast.  On our visit we sampled the breakfast sandwiches as well as fresh baked Blueberry Muffins and a Peanut Butter and Jelly muffin. (Crisp bacon fans need to request that preparation as it is served not fully crisped.)  All were very fresh and the muffins in particular are recommended for visitors to order.  Alternative Milks and Vegan options are available.

A line of customers out the door on a Saturday morning, a full parking lot, and online reviewers choosing Ebru over Starbucks is a sign of success. There are numerous coffee shops in the area and Ebru is equipped to provide a coffee fix for the most distinguishing coffee aficionado. Cupping classes, brewing equipment, technique instruction, roasted bean supply, and periodic special food offerings (local raw honey) are some extra features at the shop. See the internet sites for special events and cuisine offerings.
